I, too, agree! The "race relations" topics do nothing more than separate the greek community; and, quite frankly, have been maring what I thought were great orgs to be a part of... My only saving grace is that of the GLO/BGLO members who have kept a positive outlook and/or refrained from posting in those forums.. keep up the love!

Faced with the Divine, I was asked; "What one gift do you seek?"
I answered ever so meekly; "I seek Honor, Truth, Integrity, and Wisdom, yet those are four. How am I to choose?"
The answer came as a pounding whisper; "The four you seek are but one. I grant thee Compassion; for without it the four make none."

I too am tired of all the race topics on this board. Don't get me wrong, I think that Race Issues are very important to discuss, but there is a place for everything and greekchat isn't that place.

ZetaAce - You always keep me going
I would have to agree that this is not the place for racial issues not related to the greek world. As far as the racial issues forum goes, I guess my thinking is that a) they'll get posted anyway, and that b) if they do relate to something greek, that it won't take long to completely lose the focus and end up being a big mess (as usual!) I personally don't want to see a million posts about an issue that cannot and will not be resolved here (for reasons previously discussed by like EVERYBODY!) Nothing good can come of it (thanks MandingoNUPE). As always, ZetaAce, you're keeping me up to speed !

In one way, I think that we should leave everything as is, in another, if we specify boards more, we are going to find weaknesses in the chain that might need some repairing. For instance: Fundraising doesn't get many posts, that proves to me that people are not concerned with fundraising--which indicates a weak link in the greek chain.
|
I also noted that Fundraising - as well as Academics - is a low forum topic. Maybe we should expand on fundraising and look at it from a Financial stand point. - Include things like operating costs, fundraisers, purchasing of large items/bulk items, responsiblites of members financial. I know that "the books" are and should be a privite matter of a sister/brotherhood, but we can talk in general terms about what has and hasn't worked for our chapters.
Also, While I hate to stifle discussion, I agree, some threads have gotten out of hand as well as no longer or never did relate to greek life. While some have contained educational information, many of them can be overwhelming to someone seeking information or discussions on greek life. I no longer pay attention to some threads because they've gone circular in discussion and burn of flame wars.
And john, other then posting postive, thoughtful answers - as many of us senior memebers and moderators do, what else can we do to assist in maintaining resourceful forums? Many topics get posted in the Greek Life forum, that would be better suited else where. Though to move the post might cause problems for the initial poster. Also, what about begining discussions say in Moderators Corner, about suggestions on closing or archiving threads. (I know having said discussion in Moderators Corner places Senior members at a significant disadvantage on an opinon.)
anyway.. my few cents worth..

Today I added a new forum titled "Chit Chat" for all the non-greek related discussions.
Most people want to keep a strong focus on the greek discussions, and at the same time there are an increasing number of people interested in having non-greek related discussions with other greekchat.com members. So, instead of setting up several non-greek related discussion forums I setup the one "Chit Chat" forum to encompass all of those discussions. This will both keep the site/forums focused on greek related discussions & also will give interested users a place to discuss non-greek related topics.
I'll be moving most of the non-greek related topics out of this 'Greek Life' forum into the 'Chit Chat' forum soon.
Also, I'll be further addressing the other suggestions in this discussion shortly.

I'm thinking maybe we need a forum dedicated to potential greeks and their questions. I feel like the greek life forum as of lately has been an advice forum for general questions of incoming freshman (i.e. What's being in a sorority like, how much does it cost etc.) I think these are all important questions for potential new members but I think the greek life forum should be more of a discussion of current issues. I really think it would be beneficial to everyone to dedicate a forum besides "rush" to them. many of their questions aren't about rushing.

My 2.5 cents....
I think right now there is an influx of people who are a) preparing for college and b) have time on their hands. That's why we've been getting a lot of basic questions. I think that once school starts the volume will go down.
I post regularly on another site where when I was first on it, there were about 4 topic boards. The subtopics kept mutating and now there are about 25. It's totally obnoxious. The chit-chat forum here was a good idea, but I think it should stop there. I can just see us ending up with "Recruitment for BGLO sororities located in states that end in the letter A".
Besides, forums like this are supposed to unite us all as Greeks, not segregate us. Plus it teaches us to think a little. If someone asks "how do you join a sorority?" don't just assume that they want to join the kind you are in, whether it's NPC, NPHC, PFA or whatever. Ask what kind she's interested in, and if it's not in your field, step back & let someone else answer the question.

I'm preparing to add another new forum into the General Forums catagory, something along the lines of "Up & Coming GLOs" - as suggested by equeen.
What I am trying to do before adding the new forum is to make sure the forum name is intuitively descriptive of it's purpose. From equeen's suggestion, the forum can be described as "a forum for GLOs that are larger than a local, yet are still growing into a national GLO."
I'm thinking that "Up & Coming Nationals" or "Up & Coming National GLOs" might be a bit more descriptive of the new forum's purpose.
What are your thoughts? What should this new forum be titled?

I like the title "Up and Coming National GLOs". I can't wait for this to be added. My org definitely fits in this category 1991% I say go for it!

This may sound like a stupid idea but how about a forum for all the greeks to post their resume. Might be a useful tool for the greek community.

I was also thinking employers with greek(GLO) affiliation could also post openings on that forum as well. I thought this might be a good idea too.

I like this idea...
But I get the feeling hoosier would dominate the forum. And we don't want that.
