Considering there was a top 10 song at the time with the lyrics "boop boop diddle daddle waddum, choo" I think we need to put it in context.

Umm, then get in your time machine and go back and change it??
It's no more degrading than any other beauty pageant where women are judged on their figures - really less since she's wearing far more than most women wear clubbing these days. I'm guessing the bag was so no one would know who was who.
