You mean Jurassic Carl? That guy was a riot here in Boston, I loved hearing his random rantings in the press.

The guy behaved himself last year in Chi-town.

One of the funnier moments of the baseball season came when he got thrown out of a ballgame earlier in the year after he came out on the field and argued a call. The problem was.... he was on the DL at the time!

I loved it when he pinch hit with two outs in the 9th and got a hit to break up Mussina's perfect game. The look on his face alone was priceless as he walked up to the plate

I agree w/ Giambi, anybody notice how Sosa hasn't been 'slammin' like he used to ever since the cork incident? Hahaha

I went to Yankees games when I used to live in that area back when I was a wee little lad. I don't like how the organization is being run now though. Signing the aging Kevin Brown? Signing the not-so team-oriented Gary Sheffield? Releasing young Soriano? C'mon, gimme a break George!

Oh and about the All-Star Game...I think Torre is a great coach but the game isn't about picking your own players, it's about the guys who have played the best.

Starting 1B Jason Giambi: Batting .241
David Ortiz: had 12 more home runs and 43 more RBI.

Starting SS Derek Jeter: Batting .277
Michael Young: batting .332
Miguel Tejada: 25 more RBI, batting .310

Starting 3B A'Rod: Batting .270
Hank Blaylock: .303, more homers, more RBI

Former Yankee Ted Lilly: 7-6 4.27 ERA???
C.C. Sabathia: 5-4???

Yankee Middle reliever Tom Gordon: 2-3???

Obviously, Torre has his favorites.

Only NL player that seemed weird was...
Griffey Jr. was chosen as a starter with a .248???

Couple of things:

Gordon was a questionable pick, but you cannot just look at win-loss records when looking at how a pitcher is doing. ERA, strikeouts, K/BB ratio are more important. I'll agree that Giambi was definitely not deserving though, and with the Jeter and A-Rod picks...I mean come on, it wasn't as if they were way off (both have numbers comparable to the best at their positions this year). Every manager picks more of his guys - but remember, Torre didn't pick the starters, we (the fans) did. He picked the reserves, and I don't think he did a bad job at all of that.

As for Soriano - I would trade him again for A-Rod in a second. They didn't release him, they traded him for one of the top players of our generation. Soriano is a solid player, no doubt; but you can't question him for A-Rod.

As for the Posada for Johnson rumors - hopefully they're just rumors, I'm not completely sold that Navarro will be the answer anytime soon, and the Yankees have NO ONE else to catch. Just doesn't make sense.

Do the coaches not select the reserve slots? This policy went under review after last year's game...

According to BP, Gordon is the best non-closer relief pitcher in baseball . . . his peripherals are stupid good, he almost never allows inherited runners to score, his K/BB is out of control, and he pitches more innings, in higher leverage situations, than almost any pitcher in baseball. I might not take any reliever (non-MoRivera catagory; he's still the best) in the AL over him . . . throw in the NL, and seriously it might just be only Gagne over Flash, he's been that sick.

the Flash deserved it.

They do select the reserve slots; the fans pick the last man (this year it was Matsui in the AL, forgot who it was in the NL). I was just saying that most of the guys you had pointed out were chosen by the fans.

Rob - I didn't realize Gordon's numbers were THAT good. Haven't been on baseballprospectus et. al as much lately, so haven't caught up on the real numbers as much as I should have. I know he's been pretty dominant this year, didn't realize it was that dominant.

Just continues to prove how relatively meaningless win-loss is in judging a pitcher's personal performance.

I don't think it's gonna happen. Arizona will be asking a lot if the Johnson trade get approved.
