I'd recommend for chapters that are staunchly refusing to use the 15th Psalm to hold a TME on the meaning of our ritual. The religious context of the sorority is not intended to convert members away from their present beliefs-- it is part of our historical heritage.

I've been told over the years there has been debate over removing the term "Christian Womanhood" from the Creed. However, members of all religious and ethnic backgrounds recognize that this isn't intended as a persuasive religious inference-- it is said out of historical context for the time the document was written. It comes from being a ritual-based, values-oriented organization.

I think we can all agree that one does not need to be a Christian to espouse most "Christian Values."

(By the way, I was born and raised Jewish!)

That reminds me of our song "I Love the Pin"... for a while my advisees were singing it with one violet (no "s" to make it plural and multiple diamonds in the song!

The way some were singing it:
I love the violet, flowers of spring...

I love the Diamonds

Drove me nuts!

However, they knew "Pass it On" and the proper singular/plural "mountain top!"

OMG!! That IS how I learned it!! Had to see it in print to remember "own" and "a". (PO has it without these 2 words... )

I hear that my chapter of initiation has learned the Psalm and is now following ritual. (They've gotten some alumnae advisory support!) I'll have to inquire at DLC...

There are regional variations on everything! That's ok-- as long as meetings and rituals are performed correctly, I don't think anyone sees anything hugely wrong with a couple of tonal differences in our music! Certainly, there are much bigger fish to fry!

I honestly can't remember how we sing I Love the Pin. I know we sing it badly (and when I say that I mean off key). I'll have to pay more attention this year at Founder's Day.

As for the 15th Psalm, I learned condemned and "taketh up reward against the innocent"




I'm just curious, does anyone else just start randomly start reciting the 15th Psalm, just for the heck of it to see if you still remember it?

When your elder brother is a pastor, you get to learn to spout off as many verses as you can, just in self defense! My mother was so impressed by the 15th Psalm & ADPi that she set me up in front of him, and he was openmouthed when I just rattled it off AND said that was part & parcel of Alpha Delta Pi!

Hi Sisters,
Just a few things...

First, it is not mandatory to memorize the 15th Psalm, although one would think that it would be impossible not to after saying it so often.

Second, I love the idea of finding poems/prayers that have the same idea of what kind of person we should strive to be.

Third, the Torah is only the first five books of the Bible, so Psalms is in the Old Testament, but not in the Torah.

Finally, it would seem to me that this is a pretty small issue, meaning that not a lot of women have a problem with our sorority being too religious (judging from the comments made and from my own experiences with chapter members). It's bound to happen with a few, but nothing to get too upset over. Many chapters even have Bible study prides!
