For anyone looking for a needlework kit for their GLO, here's one source. Ours turned out great!
www.jlgi.com/Heirloom/SorFrat.html
They do say they only wholesale the kits - but they could probably tell you who carries them at retail. They also have university emblems.

Wow, these are good ideas. I'm just finishing a crocheted pillow with my letters and my class sisters' initials. I'm going to try the idea with the blocks. Sounds easy and like it will come out cute.

I loved the AKa and Delta beads (what happened to the delta pic?) -- anyway, I am having a hard time with the beading. If anyone on this board knows anything about it, could you send me an email?? Or if you know a website or whatnot.
Thanks,

some things my sisters and i have done are:
~*pass down a family tree *slambook* (i KNOW you remember those) with SAI-inspired questions
~*give each pledge a pillowcase and when she hangs out with a sister, they write a message on thier pillowcase (great for decorating)
~*i gave my little some jars of candy in our colors, decorated picture frames with puffy paint and glitter *i LOVE glitter!*, decorated a pillow for her, made her a hand-drawn scrapbook of things i loved about her, since i nicknamed her *begel* (<--yes that is spelled the right way), gave her a ton of bagels with lox and cream cheese.
i got some awesome ideas from you guys...great jobs everyone!

An idea I had (and will probably use for my little--when I get one!) was a French-style memo board (it's hard to describe these, but basically it's a fabric-colored board with ribbons cris-crossing the board, so you don't need pins to hold memos to the board...all you do it tuck it behind a ribbon). To make one, you could use a fabric in the design (maybe using one of the symbols of your sorority), with ribbon that had your letters on it. It's kind of hard to describe, but those of you who have seen them can understand (I hope)

We give our littles:
*potted flowers-our Sorority flower of course
*decorated candy dish/plate/cup
*photo album-covered in fabric, lace and ribbons
*a bulletin/dry erase board-decorated with sorority symbols & her name
*picture frame-with the wooden bigsis & lilsis placed on it
*shot glass & stickers- pick up at your local Greek store
*decorated pillow
*a t-shirt that says Lil Sis-get a matching one for yourself that says Big Sis
*License plate holders & car decals
*a journal with your favorite poem inside
If you keep a supply of all surface paint, slick/puffy paint, and some of the wooden letters around you can create gifts year round. If you see something that you think your Lil will like, take it home and put your letters and her name on it & *poof* the perfect gift.
Another idea is to buy some fabric and cut out a large set of letters & then sew or iron it on a blanket. Why shell out up to $60 for the afghans at the Greek store? You can also do this with towels or a bedspread.

hello everyone~
since you guys gave me some great ideas, i'll share some that i've either made or *thought about* making (i'm not that artistic but sometimes i get bitten by the 'crafty bug!')
*i've bought candle votives and decorated them using glass paint. it's a bit see-thru so it has a different effect and if you mess up you can let it dry, peel it off and start again.
*i bought a magnet sheet at the rag shop, traced our letters on, cut them out and painted them.
*i bought a blank tote bag and some rose iron-on transfers as well as a blank iron-on transfer sheet and fabric paint. i may wait to see who my little is and paint her name on.
*i think stole this idea from another GC's post: buy a bottle -the one i got has a cork top- and ribbon in your sorority's colors. then tie a bunch of bows and present it as a 'wish keeper.' your little can make a wish on the bow and untie it. then when all the bows are untied, she can re-tie them and pass it on. (note: it may take a while to tie enough bows to fill the bottle/jar, but i just did it while watching tv.)
*craft stores sell gel candle kits and you can alternate colors. a nice alternative to regular candles.
call me overeager but i'm excited for recruitment!

Here's some things that make nice little gifts:
--stickers of your mascot/symbol. Our symbol is the red rose and I gave my lil sis a pack of fuzzy rose stickers.
--if your symbol happens to be a rose, craft stores and other places carry floating candles shaped like roses!
--If you have the time and energy(and a computer handy), make a calendar, with each month's picture something sorority related--photos, pictures of your mascot or symbol, etc. If you have dates of upcoming events, write them in the calendar.
--little sterling silver or pewter charms of your symbol/mascot. You can find these at Wal-Mart, craft stores, gift stores, etc.
--Make a beaded bracelet in your colors, with a charm of your mascot/symbol.
--buy a small, plain, smooth-glass candleholder. Use a paint pen to write your letters on it in one of your colors, and put in it a candle of the other color.
--give your lil sis a real flower, of whatever your sorority flower is, and wrap ribbons in your colors around the vase. If it's something like a rose, carnation, lily, etc, this would be pretty inexpensive, and very thoughtful.
--If your lil lives in a dorm, buy one of those blank doorhangers and make her a cute doorhanger!
--If she lives in a dorm, get some balloons in your colors and tie them on her doorknob.
Hope this helps!
