I think it might have occurred at Michigan a couple of years ago.

Do you have more info on that? I only know Theta closed in 2016.

No.....are you sure? My understanding is that these women were not PNMs. They successfully received bids from the sorority, making them NMs. The OP stated that the new members were released "...two weeks after formal rush concluded". This means that they presumably signed MRABAs, received bids, and completed the pledging ceremony for the sorority. THEN the chapter closed and released them before initiation. Because they participated in formal recruitment, signed MRABAs and accepted bids, I thought these released women are now ineligible to receive any other NPC bids until next formal recruitment. Or does a chapter closing and releasing women from their pledge also release them from the NPC policy of waiting one year?

The OP is talking about the Phi Sigma Sigma chapter at Cornell University. PSS has reportedly been experiencing low membership numbers for a period of time. The other chapters took the quota of 45 this past winter formal recruitment and PSS "only" took 25 new members. Two weeks later, PSS HQ elected to close the chapter due to low membership numbers. The OP seems to be upset 1) that PSS HQ did this and 2) that the other sororities refuse to absorb these now chapter-less members into their chapters.

Ok, thank you! I wasn't sure and it's been hard to follow some of the vague posts.......

Way back when I was at IU, three sorority chapters closed after spring semester 1994. New members were given the option to be released or to be initiated and take alumna status after the semester. One sorority’s new members all chose to initiate, another chapter only had one new member initiate, and I’m not sure about the third. (I’m not giving away any top-secret information or gossip. There was a feature story about the chapters closing in the 1994 Arbutus yearbook.)

I think there was some scuttlebutt that the released new members mostly went to one sorority.

Yes, so, in light of that, maybe I am misunderstanding the OP's upset? She seemed concerned that the released members didn't get a chance to be in a sorority. Apparently they were released from their pledge and MRABA and allowed to be picked up via COB.....which many were.

I was replying to Cookiez about Michigan.
Mikki, however, just seems like a troll.

Oh sigh....I am getting so confused and mixing things up at this point. Sorry about that. But still, the Cornell sororities "could have" taken in the released PSS new members if they had wanted. If they don't want to, they don't have to.

I'm thinking that probably they were at quota, so they couldn't have if they'd wanted to anyway.

But the school/ Panhellenic has the option of raising quota/ total to allow those girls to be picked up IF the organizations want to extend bids. And schools can and do put significant pressure on sororities to accept new members. We have certainly seen that happen over & over. Remember the fiasco rush at Alabama.....
