I think it's sort of both.

Here's what Auburn's site says about Bid Day attire:
Also, many sororities have a members-only "formal pinning" ceremony on the evening of Bid Day. It is at this ceremony that you are given your new member pin. Many sororities require that the new members wear a white dress to this occasion. So, it's a good idea to bring one with you to Auburn. It doesn't have to be pretty or cost a fortune. As long as it is white, it will do.

Since you know you might need the dress, you've already bought it. So why not wear it?

I think a solid white dress and a solid black dress are worthwhile additions to any sorority member's wardrobe. It's probably not a bad idea to snag them when you find some you like and they're on sale!

So I am now addicted to Polyvore. Thanks for introducing me. Here's my second, better take (and truly taking advantage of the if-you-had-no-budget premise).

(On Bid Day you get a shirt from the sorority you run to...and obviously I'm working on the premise that I already knew where I was going.)

I think so but I don't even know because I was trying really hard not to look at any item details so I wouldn't be tempted to then go buy all this stuff.

I haven't even gone through recruitment yet, but if I had unlimited funds, this is the dress I would want for prefs:

I'm so glad I inspired your shopping! How did you find the shorts, on Polyvore? The bracelets are Juicy Couture.

I'm now totally addicted to Polyvore, so I thought it would be fun to do a "trainwreck PNM" kind of ensemble of recruitment outfits...you know, maybe as a warning to PNMs. Think sequin hose--that kind of ridiculous! Anyone like that idea???

I don't like it. It's one thing to keep it positive and oooh and ahhh over all the cute ideas... we already have "what not to do" but let's be a little less superficial than to completely cut someone down because of what she's wearing.

I posted it before I saw your comment, but I'd be happy to delete it if you think it's inappropriate. The idea was to be humorous, not to cut someone down because of their clothing, or give the impression that clothing is what matters.
