Numbers were down. Not sure where the "over 1000" number came from but I don't think there were even 800 registered. The last time I heard which was the beginning of last week, we were around the 700 mark.

What I overheard this weekend is that they were down 200 hundred girls from last year. However, girls were still registering as of Friday.

I wonder if the economy has anything to do with this.

numbers at Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn were all down this year- economy is probably to blame. Hopefully not as many rushees will drop and quota will hang in there around 50-55 for UT! Go Greek ends tonight- any feedback from rushees or moms out there?

About the economy: a recent article says that potential new members (and others) are expressing concerns about costs -- the article's about Iowa, but I wouldn't be surprised if most universities are seeing the same thing.

On the other hand, the following article about the U of South Carolina indicates that the econbomy doesn't seem to be a deterrent there:

Update: More on Recruitment Numbers at Tennessee

A very recent article dealing with the decline in recruitment (and enrollment) numbers at Tennessee:

Quota is being suggested between 40 and 42 but they may have dropped after the end of skit round last night. Tonight is pref and bids go out tomorrow.

i hope it doesnt go any lower than 40! 40 would be a nice size pledge class- the girls would really get close to each other. what is the retention rate among the rushees? Have many dropped out?

Wow. That is low for UT. A lot of legacies are going to be disappointed. But hopefully, a lot of those girls will realize that all the chapters at UT are good ones, accept a bid from their second choices and end up having four wonderful years. They have to decide what they want more: To be in a particular chapter, or to be part of a sisterhood. This could be a good way to make all the chapters even stronger.

Just talked to my chapter's advisor. The latest figure I have heard is that quota will be between 38 and 42 with an upper classman quota of between 5 and 8. Upperclassmen were free invites against the chapter's release figures given by Panhellenic. I haven't heard any retention figures yet.

Wow again. I'll be interested to hear how many dropped out. Like I said before, there are going to be a lot of disappointed legacies.

Pi Phi has a rule that if we invited a legacy to preference, we have to give her a bid. Do other groups have the same rule? If so, many of those decisions already have been made, and I wonder how that affected the number who returned for preference.

It's my understanding that the girls don't know who they are going back to until they get there tonight so I wonder how many will drop out when they realize who they wanted hasn't asked them back.

As far as giving a legacy a bid, we didn't have to give them a bid but they were usually ranked so high on our bid list that it might as well have been a rule that we had to give them one. Of course they might put someone else first as well.
