I think someone is hearing that little rattling thing that is used on a pressure cooker/canner. I know I am.
Notice taken.
And I am deliberately turning down the heat.

I *think* some people are missing the obvious. Chi Omega took action, and you can bet your bottom dollar they ASKED that active what was written before they acted. There were three women in that photo and who knows who all saw it? So arguing about photoshopping seems like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic at this point.

It is most certainly not obvious that the active in question confessed to posting a racial slur. If I missed that, please point it out.

While I am sure everyone involved would like to think that no one could be so stupid, having been at several UA Bid Days, I can tell you that even at 10:00 a.m. there is a sufficient amount of alcohol flowing among fraternities and many actives in sororities that 'best judgement' may not be in use. I could see how, fueled by a couple of drinks on not enough sleep or food, this could easily happen. Lesson learned too late...

I agree that there is plenty of "stupid" to go around, but I'm still holding out hope that there is more to the story. The university's investigation is apparently still underway, so they must be taking additional investigative steps and time that Chi O nationals did not.
It's a big deal, since not only do these accusations wreck the life of a young woman, these also reflect horribly on her chapter, university and state.

I totally agree with you, HartofSEC, I would love for their to be some plausible way this didn't happen. Unfortunately, 'snapchat' has sold a bill of lies to kids telling them their messages are temporary. A simple screenshot will save it for posterity. The thing is that now we have to believe that someone maliciously saved a screenshot and modified it in a program where said picture is only available for a matter of seconds. Possible, but seems unlikely. I hate it for the University most of all. I would never judge a whole group of girls by one member, but it seems that all of the south is judged by the actions of a few every day.

So apparently TFM and TSM have removed their articles about the snapchat incident. They only do that if it's for legal reasons and occasionally because people in the story asked.
I'm wondering who got them to delete it.

I do NOT judge Chi Omega - the chapter or the entire fraternity - because of one person's actions. Nor do I tar the university with the same brush, or the geographic area that is called the South. I venture to say that the majority of posters on this thread share my sentiments. Instead, I am extending my hand and heart in support. What can I do to help? What can I do to make a difference? The widest influence for good is what Theta asks of me, so I look to my immediate sphere of influence and that's where I start.
I find it problematic and puzzling that many people who consider themselves Christians are both judging and judgmental. I thought that was one of the main teachings of Jesus Christ - don't judge, forgive, turn the other cheek. Maybe I misunderstood.
Do not kid yourselves or feel superior (addressed to those for whom that shoe fits). It could just as easily have been a Theta, an AOII, a Tri Delta - name any other sorority. Alcohol plus sleep deprivation plus indiscriminate use of technology pluls a whole host of other factors = human failures.
Yes Mary Poppins I'm still tilting at windmills.

Chi O has been replying to posts on its FB page about the photoshopping. They are saying the image from TFM was not the original. It was altered, but the original had the same word in it. So it looks like the implication is that someone shopped the original to make it look like it was a bad shop job and imply the original said something different. Rather devious!

I looked at it, and the double g's do look a little different, but I don't know enough about pixels and resolution and spacing and such to know whether that has any basis in reality.
I'll reiterate what I said before - the ninja thing is hurtful too and she shouldn't have been posting that either and should have faced discipline for it. Obviously this is skyscraper vs. shack, but if she wouldn't have been bragging in the first place no one could have photoshopped it.

What a complete and total mess. The attempts at PR just drag this incident out and makes the situation worse. That unfortunate woman should slink away and consider her decision making process. NOTHING is private when it leaves the confines of your own head.

I don't accept any excuses like poor judgement, drunk, etc. That was inside her. That's how she thinks deep down. Period. And that is unacceptable, but so deeply ingrained I don't know how you turn that around.
I'd be mortified if I were her parents, but in all likelihood she learned it from them.

I agree. Am I surprised that there is a racist person attending college at UA? No. There are racists at every university in the nation. Part of being a civilized society is keeping your ingrained prejudices to yourself. This woman broke that rule even if she thought her little snapchat would only hang around for a few seconds. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Alabama can't seem to catch a break. In the very year they were about to make history for having their lipstick on straight for once, in Snapchat the Girlie Girls. The story has made its way to the news in England.

Wow. I think I may have just made Snapchat into a verb. Thus evolves language.

Long time lurker here. I'm also a forensic analyst. Snapchat does keep a copy of everything you send. The app has a database and every thing is stored in a table. Just looking at the table, it doesn't appear to be a picture, but once I export the files and slap a ".jpeg" on the end of them, all those pictures appear. I use this technique to get bad guys every week. But yes, the company is lying when they say that the image goes away. It's right there on your phone and it's on the phone of the person you sent it to.
I have to wonder if Chi O did any forensics to determine if the person in question sent the image.
