When I attended UA..."Old Row" referred to the fraternities more than sororities. Old Row is University Blvd. fraternities that include SAE, which was founded at UofA, and other historically "southern" frats. New Row is/was Jefferson Ave. fraternities.
Old Row sororities would include 6-7 sororities having long standing chapters at UofA, but geographic location has nothing to do with it...as I knew it waaaay back then.

Girls from my hometown were all over the place. I wrote recs for two girls - 1 went KD, 1 went AGD.
The others pledged:
1 - XO
1 - ZTA
2 - PHI MU
2 - AOPI
3 - AXO

I was an DZ at UA and Phi Mu was not considered "Old Row" while I was there 95-00. I was always told that they wanted to be considered "Old Row" and that DZ was asked to be apart of the so-called "Old Row" cliche, but refused it.

Old Row
Here's the answer I got on last year's Bama thread. There was some debate about who was part of the group. I saw some longer lists and some the same size but with different names.
"As far as old row, I thought at Alabama that included Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta, Chi Omega, Tri-Delt, & Alpha Gamma Delta. My hubby reminded me that Alpha Chi Omega & Phi Mu are or were sometimes considered Old Row (back in school when we were both there) as well!
We all jokingly said it was whomever was invited to Lake Party that year. Ha Ha!"
You Bama folks would know what Lake Party is.

I do remember what Lake Party is/was!!! Is that showing my age?! Do they still even have that party? Your list of sororities is dead on with the inclusion of the last two at the party....what a memory! They were even listed on the Lake Party t-shirt we all got.

Back in my day (80's) old row = old money.
KD, Alpha Gam, Tri-Delt, and Kappa were the top of Old Row.
Chi O and Phi Mu, were still considered Old Row and very desirable and hard to get into, but they were considered slightly "newer" money, and therefore not quite as prestigious as the first four. I am glad to see that mindset amongst the PNM's has changed somewhat...

I'm a Bama Pike alum, obviously, and we were even in on a couple of the Old Row lake parties and Pikes are definitely not Old Row. However, our new house will be on University Blvd so maybe we'll be asked back.

ua70s - my era too - you're right, that's what it was called back in our day. But now Old Row means something different.

Right...back in our day, it was the "circle sororities."

Well, I've wasted another day hovering on GreekChat waiting for recruitment information. I'm giving up for the day which means the list will be posted in the next ten minutes. [/shaking of fist]

I definitely know what a Lake Party is and attended quite a few. Question to the rest of you Bama alums, who actually attended a Lake Party that was actually on a lake?

Would a young lady really "choose" her potential new membership based upon "old row" ... "new row" ... or how much the fees are? Is there really that much a difference in fees?

Next to the KA house right across from the Music Building. The University Board of Trustees approved it a couple of months ago. Also heard from some Sigma Chi alums that they are considering building a new house.

I'm a little late to the party as I've just made a few posts tonight but I've been lurking all week. My cousin's daughter was going through rush (excuse but I can't get into using "PNM", recruitment, etc.) this week and she pledged AOPi. She was an out-of-stater and enjoyed the week even with its ups and downs. Thanks for all of your posts. It been an extra diversion from work.
