It's to create the "illusion" of security. I remember in the hotel parking lots of Las Vegas....the security guards just kinda wave you through....

The stories that I've read are that it was a hunter or butcher type of knife, or a "Rambo knife" according to some witnesses.
The whole thing is sickening and disturbing, to put it mildly.
