Thanks guys! I know that I have drank way too much soda this summer and I need to quit. Of course what does the sorority house have- a whole table of just junk food plus sodas! Anyway doesn't xenadrin have phen-fen in it which is bad for you?

Phen-Phen is a perscription drug. One part Phentramine (speed) and one part fenfleuramine (sp) an appetite supressant I believe. The second part of it caused the heart problems. They still prescribe the speed part.

Xenadrine is an ephedrine caffeine combination, using natural source material.

Epherine has been much maligned recently in the media. But unless you have a serious heart condition or bad asthma it won't bother you.

The ephedrine and caffeine has been shown in clinical studies to enhance fat loss. If you want to knwo all the science behind it . . . I'll go into it later. *yawn* Tired now.

Simple ways to think of weight loss.

Real definition of diet: What you take in your body.

What people think it means: What they take into their bodies when trying to lose weight.

Important difference. Usually people "diet" to lose the weight their "normal diet" put on them. And then go back onto that "normal diet" and wonder why they gain the weight back . . . I despair!

"Silly Rabbits, tricks are for kids!"

diet times lifestyle equals appearance.

Lifestyle is your basic activity level, and sleep patterns . . . If you are very active and sleep correctly, you can get away with a better diet. Lifestyle has a more powerful effect on appearance than diet.

So, pick what you want to look like and adjust your lifestyle and diet to match that look . . . Don't change diet and lifestyle to look better, and expect to keep that look if you revert to the pattern that made you out of shape to begin with!

I'll probably post something on training and diet manipulation later . . . I've read a lot of the posts on training and will say they are well intentioned but many don't show a scientific appreciation of correct training and diet manipulation.

As far as the low carb thing . . . people look at Atkins or its variations (the diet has been around for a long time before him) as a diet to lose weight . . . Which it is kind of. What it is really, is a diet that recognizes that your body's inability to process carbs very well makes you fatter than you would be otherwise . . . its a subtle but important distinction. Because it what it shows is that if you want to keep the weight off you HAVE to lower the carbs to below the level you were eating before.

I too have gained ten pounds this summer and I am furious!!! It's so much easier to put it on than take it off! When I'm at school I always stay at the same weight because even if I eat junk food all the time, I walk around campus all day. During the summer, I sit at a desk all day. Right now about 5 of my sisters are on the Weight Watchers point system and it has really worked for them. I think my problem is that I can go most of the day without being hungry but at night when I sit down and watch tv I get major munchies! Anyone else have this problem?

Well Dr. James summed up pretty much everything I was gonna say. Nevertheless, here's a few more tips that you may find beneficial.

Drink one or two cups a coffee a day. Scientific research continues to prove the positives that caffeine does for your body. When it comes to losing weight, most of the standarad ephedrine-caffeine-aspirirn weight loss pills (that James mentioned) are loaded with it because caffeine speeds up your metabolism and breaks down fat cells. If you really want to go for the healthy choice, select Green Tea instead.

Meal Replacements are excellent sources to cut calories. Whether it be Whey Protein or a homemade shake.
One question: these low-carb diets, why is it alright to eat lots of cheese? It's loaded with fat.

It's not ok to eat lots of cheese because it does have carbs. But the idea on a low carb diet is to count carbs and not worry about the fat. Your body burns carbs first (converting them into fat if you eat too much), then bodily fat. For some reason (Dr. Atkins explains this) your body burns bodily fat before dietary fat.

Personally, I never bought into the concept, and I follow a diet that is low carb and relatively low fat.

Hmmm, Lil_G, I never thought about the caffeine thing. I've just found a justification for my coffee habit!!

I've advised my own kids to take a P.E. course every semester. It insures that they'll get exercise, teaches them a new skill, and will get them an hour of "A" credit unless they screw around in class, which isn't permitted for members of this family!

Low-Carb plus a good Cardio workout can really work. I lost about 10lbs over one month last summer eating less than 30gm Carb and running 5miles a day...there are so many diets out there but you cannot just diet alone. Exercise has to be in there somewhere.

There's a great soda out there that is caffeine, sugar (aspertime too) and sodium free...Diet Rite. Lable has all zeroes on it and it STILL tastes pretty good. I started noticing my one can of diet coke a nite as a late snack was catching up to me so diet rite is the way for me now.

I just thought I would mention the negative aspects of xenadrine, now I know a lot of people that have taken it, combined with a work out plan and have had no problems. But xenadrine is an amphetamine (speed) don’t fool yourself about its dangers, im a big guy at 6’7” 280 lbs and one pill of that stuff gets my heart pounding, I would hate to see what it does to a smaller person. Basically people push themselves to hard when trying to lose weight (that’s why so many people quit) so xenadrine plus a tough cardio program and low calorie intake, could put you at risk for heart failure. Just something to think about, there’s no magic pill that’s going to make you lose weight, just a lot of hard work. Its good to push yourself but always know your limits.

Kevlar- thanks for mentioning Xenadrine and its negative effects. I am 5'3 and that stuff sounds deadly for a person like me.
The sad part is I used to play sports in high school- cross country, track, swim team, v-ball/basketball-jr.high. Now I can barely run a few laps without be exhausted.

Kev - Yeah there is an inherent danger of taking too many of those pills. The problem is the "recommended" dosage is too high for anyone. Most ppl down a ton and then can't sleep for days. There was a 22 year old male from Toronto that had a heart attack because he took too many ephedrine combination pills. For some ppl that are obese it probably would give them a heart attack. I saw a guy I knew who just started working out at the gym and he told me his heart-rate was well over 200 beats a minute. I can just barely get in the High Zone at 174 beats a minute, but the last time I did I was running so hard another 30 seconds and I would have puked.

Carnation - That's so true. I see many kids where I work, today they are fatter than ever. The worse part is when they're like that at such a young age it's almost impossible for them to lose the weight.

About the xenadrine (what we jokingly call "trucker speed.") I used to work with a guy who was really into fitness and was taking that Ripped Fuel supplement. The worst side affect I saw was how irritable it can make you. Do you ever get a little snappy when you've had too much coffee? This stuff makes that 10x worse. Also, I'm not quite 5'6'' and I took one of those once. I felt like I'd just had a POT of coffee - shaking, heart pounding, freaking out, etc. But wait, there's more. You can get addicted to that stuff. When you try to come off of it you'll have full withdrawl symptoms. (Headache, craving, major irritability) I really liked the idea about green tea.

My advice on losing weight is to drink lots and lots of water all day long and walk for 30 min or so outside. The water keeps your system flushed and is good for your skin and keeps you feeling full. The walking will give you energy and that great workout glow Plus, you burn cals. Do not try to go too wild on the dieting 'cause when you start goin' out to eat with your sisters again you'll gain it back. Just try to eat smarter, drink water and walk.....you will look fit in no-time!
