I can't believe I'm about to do this, but here goes:
I think Elephant Walk's comment was so OVER THE TOP as to be irony. Was it offensive? Yes.
Was it meant to be taken seriously? I don't think so.
He was obviously building on the earlier loafer comment, taking it to the outrageous level to be humourous.
Kinda like Jonathan Swift and "A Modest Proposal", without the wit.

I could sit here and come up with all kinds of offensive and racist comments against just about every group known to man; I've written papers on the topic. I don't know any members of some of these groups and have no problems with them (I'm not even sure where I WOULD encounter some of these groups if I were to try to meet them). But I could still type up this crap and spew it all over this message board if for some reason I felt the need, and it would still be rude and offensive regardless of whether I felt any real hatred for the people or not. I'd have to at least feel disrespect and a lack of empathy toward these people I haven't met to type it in the first place ...

He was commenting on the post by AlexMack who said that my shoes had to be at least 19th century to be "elitist".
Obviously if I had a pair of jewskin shoes they would be in the neighborhood of 500-700 years old.
