Not until she makes the grades to get off academic probation is she allowed to get her stuff back and wear her letters again. Semesters are six months-that's a looong time! Plus, she is not required to pay fees, either locally or to national. Does this make sense to any of you? If all of this is true, it obviously hurts both the girl and the chapter. Especially if there are several girls that don't make their grades.
I am aware of girls on academic probation not being able to take part in certain social events, but have never heard of all the rest of it. Then again, it's been a long time since I was in school. So, my question is obviously, is this status quo these days?
Wow that seems harsh, especially after only 1 semester of not making grades. IMHO the focus needs to encouragement, not shunning which pretty much is what this sounds like to me. We don't want members falling off the face of the earth never to be heard from again. I imagine that if you ban them from chapter meetings, philanthropy events, sisterhood activities, etc. then you'd have a tough time getting them involved again (hopefully) once they did make grades. As for the dues, I would think you'd have to pay them at least to Inat'l to maintain your membership.

Hijack of my own thread-my daughter got a letter yesterday saying that she has been nominated for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. When I called her, she said that she thinks the Greek Advisor nomimated her, because of a comment she made to my daughter. My question: does anyone know if this a big deal anymore, especially when, according to the letter, the committee also accepts self-nominations?
Sorry to butt in, but it's my Macon family so I guess it's not really!
I was nominated by the Campus Life & Greek Life office (I believe) at my campus (I was on Panhellenic and newly inducted to OOO at the time). It's really not THAT big a deal. It's something nice to put on a resume and they have a ceremony, but I didn't buy the book or anything since I'd never heard of it before. I did get a certificate though. But it's not going to change your life and you certainly don't get a check in the mail! LOL!

Zillini-I agree completely with you, and that's why I'm thinking this just can't be correct. She's not on Exec, so maybe she's confused about some of this. But I do know she said more than once that those girls have to turn their letter stuff in. I'll see if I can get a clearer picture from her big sister, who IS on Exec.

BabyPiNK_FL: I didn't think it was such a big deal, either. And apparently, neither did she, because she left the letter and application on the kitchen counter this weekend when she left!

that is harsh

Our chapter requires a certain number of supervised study hours a week depending on what the GPA of the sister was. Also, if we are on supervised scholarship, we have to get a report given and signed by each professor and we have to have a monthly meeting with our scholarship chair. I think taking a sister's letters away until she gets her grades up is a little harsh. We only take letters away if a sister quits or gets her membership cancelled.

Welcome to Greekchat!! Go up to our Rollcall thread and introduce yourself!!!

Sounds like your chapter has some great ways to stay on top of grades, and hopefully, your chapter has a high academic standing on the sorority list.
