One of our alumnae is a probation officer, and part of her job is to make sure registered sex offenders check in with her periodically. She also has to ask them how they're doing, and talk to with their psychiatrists and make sure they're doing what they need to do.
She did a presentation for my chapter about some general safety things (like alcohol safety) before Spring Break. Well she also went into internet safety a little bit.
She mentioned something that was really scary. She says that alot of the sex offenders she works with actually DON'T target children. According to her, the growing trend among sex offenders is targeting COLLEGE AGED WOMEN (like 18-24 year olds). She has heard sex offenders admit to using MySpace to stalk college aged women. The scariest part? When searching for these girls, one of their main search words was "sorority" or browsing sorority Myspace groups.
It amazed me at just how easy it was for some of these guys to find women because of what they put online. She told us about a young woman who was raped by a guy. Once they caught him, he admitted to having looked up her MySpace, gotten her FULL name, Googled her, and found her address in her churches' online directory.

Wow. I wonder how many creepy Sex-offender type guys (besides James, I mean) are searching GC at any given time??
