But to answer some questions (as I straighten out my Georgetown Alumni t-shirt that I oh so coincidentally am wearing)....
AEPi seems to be really strong at Georgetown. I know the men in the founding class were really excited about having a Jewish fraternity at a school that is, well, very Jesuit.
I wrote a letter to the editor about an editorial the Georgetown Voice did. I hope they publish it this week. It sickened me how they tried to dissuade men from joining SigEp because of "frat" stereotypes. Pissed me off.
Georgetown does have secret societies. They are called The Stewards and there is more than one society with the name. (Second, Third, etc. -- the first is no more.) I am not a member but I guess I was a sympathizer, LOL.
GP, I also think a recognized Greek Life at Georgetown would thrive! But they won't even let NPHC orgs have community service projects on campus! At most, they will let a GLO STEP in a step show. I wrote an article about this once.
I mean, isn't Knights of Columbus all male? We have that. Why not a GLO?
As for the "fringe" Greek life....I believe that in the absence of a traditional system, our service and professional GLOs probably have more of a fraternal feel than most campuses. (Actually, I think many other orgs are like that at Georgetown, too.) Delta Sigma Pi, Delta Phi Epsilon (Fraternity), and Alpha Phi Omega all DEFINITELY pledge and socialize IN ADDITION to following their stated missions. It fills a need the folks have.
And finally, Georgetown also had ROTC fraternities, like the Spraker Rifles.
I see now that I need to spend a Saturday back at Lauinger Library and brush up on Georgetown's fraternal history....
