My best friends from college and I met in the weirdest situation: in class.

D and I had a Afam history class together and one day we happened to sit next to each other. Turned out she lived in my dorm on the same floor. That was all she wrote. Almost 10 years and a child later, she's my sister and Godmother to my daughter. My other best friend and I had a philosophy class together. She asked the girl who was sitting between us to ask me if she could borrow my book. I said Sure. Later, I found out that she didnt ask me herself b/c I looked mean (it was an un-air conditioned room in the middle of July in NC, you'd look mean too! lol). We ended up hanging out that summer, and the rest is history. Im now her Soror in addition to being her sister, and she's an only child too.
I guess the point is to just be yourself. If you're in school, form study groups (great friends come out of this), or ask ppl from class or your floor to eat lunch or dinner with you. I am blessed to have a best friend from each phase of my life: middle school, high school and two from college, but I have a few close friends outside of those phases also. And I have a TON of cyber friends from GC too..
