I 'm bringing this back in order to ask a question...
As stated above, I am the newly elected VP of my school's chapter of NAACP, I want to be THE most effective leader possible, so I was wondering if any of you were affiliated with this organization, and if so, what kind of programs and activities were implemented? I need ideas!
Thanks in advance,
Tamika

I'm in NAACP at my school. I'm kind of dissapointed about our involvement on campus last year. But we have a wonderful new president who I have faith in to do a good job.
Anyway, our chapter of NAACP sponsors and participates in an annual Thanksgiving dinner for the less fortunate, we a Martin Luther King march in rememberance of Dr. King. The march is followed with a message from a keynote speaker. One year we had Dick Gregory. This past Jan. our scheduled speaker was a member of DST(I can't remember her name) but she was unable to make it. I think it had something to do with flight problems. We have a Fall Ball as a fundraiser and lastly we have Unity Day. We invite all organizations from greeks to the choir to the Asian American student union to set up information tables about their specific organization. There's food, activities, music, and plenty of fun.
Other than that, not to much happens. We're working on it though. I look forward to the fall semester.

I guess I failed to add things other than the community service aspect of the organization. I don't want anyone to think that we don't support the problems and injustices of the balck students on our campus. I thought Nubian wanted to know about other activities we have other than those geared toward direct action. But here are a few.
Our campus has had protest and marches to get the only black candidate for the student association back on the ballot after he was removed for false reasons. With the help of NAACP his named was placed on the ballot and he ended up winning the election.
We are also trying to do something about the prejucies black people face on or campus, from admissions into certain academic programs as well as mistreatment from the county police department.

Hi Nubian. The first thing to becoming an effective NAACP College Chapter in your community is to research your campus and community. Research to find out the problems and injustices people face on and off campus. Write a letter to the newspapers on/off campus letting them know your present and that people can come to the NAACP for help when needed. Also remember that the NAACP is a direct action organization not community service so our job is to find out about the problem, research the problem, then take direct action by marches, Rallies etc. I would perosnally start with researching your community on/off campus to find out exactly what programs your community needs and would benefit from. For example, in Long Beach we have a high AIDS rate so doing a lot of research about how health aware the community is, who has access to health care, and if their being discriminated agiaist would be a good start for our chapter. Are you attending the NAACP National Convention? I'll be there i HOPE to see you there! Well that's all I have for now. Thanks.
