This is one of those questions for which there really is no answer. There have been numerous dynasties in the past including schools like UCLA, Southern Cal, Michigan, Penn State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama and lots of others.
It doesn't just come down to number of wins.
I would agree on one thing -- that Notre Dame is probably the over all most storied team in college football history.

Because of the social climate during ND's early years I must respectfully disagree w/you in other words the playing field was not a level one.
The CANES are the #2 team in the nation this week, looks like another National Championship year.

In the early years of football, things were very different from what they are today. Heck, in the Bud Wilkinson era of OU football, the OU Touchdown Club would pay HUGE signing bonuses to recruits right out of HS -- it was better money than the pros were paying if they'd play for OU. The social climate was just different though.
And as far as being the #2 team in the country.. it's a long season. Miami's SOS will catch up with them. IF OU beats Okie State and A&M, they'll come out on top.
If not, I think it'd be hilarious for OU to back into a "championship" game a la USC in the Fiesta Bowl against someone like an undefeated Utah.

I would argue that your comment above about so many guys going to the NFL early would help disqualify Miami from the "best" bracket in college football.
There are teams who have been recent national champions who actually graduate some of their star players. The talk about "student" athletes should have some meaning. If not, let's just drop the charade, pay college football players, and make the BCS a farm organization for the NFL.
And "ever" is a pretty long time. When you consider "ever" you can compare Miami's five national championships to Oklahoma and Ohio State's seven each. I don't have time to do a search, but I'll bet there are schools with even more than that.
No, taking nothing away from this year's Miami team, I just can't buy the idea that Miami is the best football power "ever." You might make an argument for the best overall program over the past twenty years -- but not "ever."
ETA -- it actually appears that Notre Dame has won eleven national football championships. Michigan has won eight. Alabama won six under Bear Bryant. That's if I counted them all correctly.

If you were a junior in college, and several million dollars were being waived in your face, would you stick around for your senior year?

True...I'm not sure any one of us are able to say what we would do in that situation.
Best college football team ever? I don't think so...but I'm not sure it's a question with one answer.

If Miami is the best ever, what is UNC?

Well, some do. How about Jason White?
Some people actually expect to graduate -- or at least play out their eligibility. I suppose it depends on who and how you recruit.
Granted that you could sustain a career ending injury in your senior year -- but I think it would be safe to say that most athletes do feel some committment to their university.
Finally, I suppose today's game puts a bit of a damper on this year's Miami team being the best ever.

It was a bad night for the CANES but I still think they are the best college team ever North Carolina joins a list of underdog teams that managed to upset the CANES. Now about graduation many CANES players leave early for the NFL but continue their studies and do graduate from College so your point is not valid, besides Jason White stayed in college b/c he would have plenty of problems on the professional level. Ken Dorsey stayed @ Miami for the same reasons ,Jason White will be another Tim Couch.

So right now... at this moment... they're the best team "ever"
You'd take the current Miami team versus.. say Nebraska from '95?
