My late godmother was a sorority girl @ Purdue during WWII, and she told me we were known as the "Lamby Pies" by the ladies on campus. That sorta takes the rugged "Chops" image & throws it to the ground, doesn't it?

Guess we in Kansas are hidden from the real world, No Water Melon Fest and are known as Lambda Chis! Well at Gorillaville at The Pitt.!

Boz, a "Sorority Girl", omg, Granny and a few Sorors have to be cringing!

Here's what my Dictionary says:

lamby pie: n. a) term of endearment from a sorority girl b) fighting words from a frat guy.

chopper: n. a) lumberjack b) helicopter c) macho nickname for a member of Lambda Chi Alpha (see chipper chopper and chopperLI905 :-).

lamb chop: n. dinner

Okay, enough of the P.C. BS...the term "sorority girl" was the way my godmother described herself. Even my late mother would speak about going out to dinner w/her friends, the "DAR girls".

For women raised in that era, the term "girls" wasn't considered an insult. It wasn't my intent to be viewed as misogynistic.

Brothers,

My Zeta did hold two very popular parties in the past that related to the nickname "Chopper."

I remember the "Chopper" Party that was centered on a 1920s-30s gangster theme. We dressed up in trench coats, dark glasses, and carried Thompson submachine guns. Well, actually, very nice Mattel copies that did produce a very satifying "rat-a-tat-tat" sound! Of course, the nickname for the Thompson was "Chopper." We "kidnapped" our dates and took them back to our "speakeasy" styled Chapter room. A great party; lots of fun; and great memories. Can you imagine doing this today?

I also remember the more recent "Wood Choppers Ball." This involved a lot of plaid shirts; fake French Canadian accents; axes; and a big party in the woods! The "Moose was Really Loose!" We did rent a local lodge building, in a nearby state park, for the dance. However, I do believe that some Brothers also rented cabins for other overnight recreational purposes....

Yours in ZAX,

Mike Raymond, ZUZ

Brothers,

My wife still refers to herself as a Sorority Girl at times. She does not refer to me as a Fraternity Boy, but at my age, I wouldn't mind at all....

I believe after graduation some of them prefer to be called sorority women.
I dunno.

I don't really use anything other than Lambda Chi, though our official recognition from the university recognizes Lamda Chi Alpha.

Boz, I think you are so right about the PC BS!

Mike, You are so right, the partys that we as oldsters used to do would never be allowed to day in This "P C" and "Risk Management" era that we live in.

Choppers Ball sounded like a blast

Even though We all live under the Banner of LXA it just goes to show We are all a little different not only in the make up of our members but of Chapters also.

It is for this reason that I look with fondness at the picture at G A of some of the G C Brothers that Brother Bozs wife took. From all areas, Kansas, New York, Mass., Texas, Kentucky, Florida, Illinois and Tenn. Six of the eight were Alums.

Maybe it is likening Frat Boys and Fraternity Men.

Brothers,

I am also reminded of the early effort, by the national leadership at that time, to adopt the nickname "Lam Chi!"

Brother Mike,

That contraction is indeed mentioned in early editions of the Paedagogus (Songs of Lam Chi) and the PG&G, I think. Unfortunately it doesn't roll off the tongue easily, nor have a pleasant ring to it. I'm surprised they ever used it. But you certainly are right.

In ZAX,
Jono
