I'm so sorry to hear about your dog! I was beside myself for days after my dog died. And I agree, I think dogs do know more than we realize. When mine died he went right after my mom got up for work in the morning. She said she thought he waited so that he could sort of "say goodbye". That just broke my heart when she said that.
On the subject of getting a new dog I would definately wait a while. As much as you want something to fill the void, I think it might make it more painful. Having another dog around might remind you of your old dog and how it's not the same. Let your heart heal before you get attached to another dog.

SLAM,
Melanie

i'm so sorry hon. i know how you feel. i had to put my cat down a year ago. didn't go so smoothly.
what's nice is that animals don't look at death the same way we do.
i'd say, get another dog when you feel you are ready to. some people don't waste anytime getting another, but some wait a year or so.

ps - this may sound odd, but you can get the ashes made into a pendant. they are quite beautiful, but sort of odd. just a thought.

I'm so sorry for your loss! My family dog of 16 years died recently and I know how hard it is.
As far as getting another dog, I wouldn't rush right out and get another dog immediately - give yourself a little time to grieve. But ultimately I think its whenever you feel ready for another dog, whether that's in one month or six.

I'm doing alright, thank you. My dad has her ashes and collar and tags....I was going to take the tags but then he told me that he was going to give me everything (including her registration papers and stuff like that) if I'd be patient. So.... Meh.

I know it's been a month, but I just stumbled on this post today. My four year old cat passed away today, and I am beside myself. She had a seizure out of nowhere. I still have one cat, and I am worried that he is lonely. They were my buddies, and I am lost without my baby girl.
DA- I am sooo sorry about your dog, I know exactly how you feel. I take comfort knowing that while they were here on Earth they had a good lives with people who loved them. I just was wondering if you feel better about it now that a little time has passed?

wow, what a sudden death. i'm so sorry to hear that. you should definately think about getting another cat. and this is a good time to get a kitten if you want a kitten. breeding season is coming to an end soon.
DA - have you decided on whether or not to get another dog?

May I suggest going to a shelter? I myself have 4 cats & while they may drive me crazy at times, I love them soooo much.

Thanks I feel a lot better than I did a week ago. I am going to a the Humane Society to find a new kitten tomorrow, and I can't wait!!! The house seems empty with one cat, I think a new addition will stir up some needed excitement. Besides, I have always been a two cat person.

so i know this is a bit off topic, but i need some help concerning a dog. like i need help ASAP. do you know of anyone who is interested in an american bulldog/pit bull terrier mix? she's really really sweet, about a year old or so, seems to do well with most dogs, not housebroken yet. she was found on wandering on the side of the road in dayton. PLEASE let me know if you can help. i need to help find either a temporary home or a permanent home for her within the next couple of days. i'm willing to transport within a reasonable distance. thanks!
