I loved Merry-Go-Round. Anyone ever heard of it? One of my sisters worked there so I was able to buy all my sleazy, spandex, tankdresses and other club clothes for, I think, 50% off.
It's gone now, though, and I guess that's okay since I no longer look so good in spandex

The stores in the Edison Bros. chain:
Leeds
3*5*7
Coda
JW
I especially miss 3*5*7 and Leeds because of their inexpensive clothes and shoes.
We still have a Contempo Casuals here...didn't they get bought out by Wet Seal?
Hawaii also no longer has a JCPenney. They left last year.
Woolworth's was a favorite childhood store of mine. They always had the cheapest cassette tapes and Atari/Nintendo games!

Yes! That was the place to shop in my late elementry and early junior high years! Everyone wanted to wear IOU, but it was kind of expensive, if I remember it correctly.

I immediately knew you were from Ohio. There was a Gold Circle out in Bedford where the TJ Maxx sits across from a Target. They tried to replace Gold Circle with Ames but that is now closed.
I miss Petrie's. They had other names like Marianne too but the one I shopped at was named Petries.
I miss BEST too.

I don't know if it was a national chain, but I miss the Ganto's in Woodfield as it was when I was in high school. It was the best place to get a homecoming dress! Towards the end, they started specializing in mafia wife clothes, and that's when I stopped shopping there.

Remember Barbara Moss ladies? I still have an awesome tank top from there that I got in the 8th grade. It has a stain on it though so I never wear it.

NEW YORK
Alexander's
Gimbel's
Woolworth's
Gertz
McCrory
FLORIDA
Jordan Marsh
Woolco (Woolworth's answer to K-Mart; to this day I can't get that silly-assed earworm known as the Woolco jingle outta the back of my mind!)
Jefferson (later Jefferson-Ward) (former employee)
NATIONWIDE
Montgomery Ward (former employee)

Our Jordan Marsh has been Macy's forever now, but we can't stop calling it Jordan Marsh.
When I lived in Atlanta I loved, loved, loved Drug Emporium. Great store with terrific deals! One opened here, but closed within a year and I was heartbroken. I've heard that the Atlanta stores were bought out by Eckerd's.

To whoever mentioned the Hardees... there are still Hardees in the South. They are now Carl's Jr. in a lot of places, but we still have plenty of Hardees here.
RedRoseSAI, I think Ganto's WAS a national chain. I also remember finding formal dresses there, but it also had a lot of clothing that I would not have worn.

Ups n Downs
Nature's Element (almost like The Body Shop)
D & L (a department store that was in the New England area or just only in Connecticut)
Warner Brothers Studio Store (I love the Bugs Bunny and Tasmanian Devil slippers, those were sooooooooo cute!)
