Oh no! Maybe you misunderstood. I'm not necessarily advocating spending more money on it (although it would help). I'm just saying that if marijuana were legal or if they spent less time (hence money) pursuing people using marijuana for medical purposes, they could more effectively catch and prosecute people doing harder and more dangerous drugs. As it is now, I know there is little to no more money to spend on drug law enforcement. That's definitely a shame, but unfortunately there's very little we can do about it.

I don't think law enforecement really concentrates on users. They focus on distributors. So, in a sense, your argument needs to be tweaked.
I'm personally for legalization almost accross the board. About the most potent stuff I'll touch is my home brewed beer. However, just because the law says that it's illegal to light up a crack pipe, it doesn't really stop people from doing so. I really like what they've done in Holland regarding drugs. For the more dangerous types of drugs, people are required to take them under government supervision. Sounds expensive, but is probably a lot cheaper than our current enforcement alternatives and certainly safer for law enforcement officers.

I'm all for them targeting distributors. However, I think they should take what they can get, if need be. If you nab a user, they can inform on their dealer (if you work out a protection deal!). And I'm with you on not partaking in hardcore substances. I rarely even partake of beer, much less illegal drugs. Never have, never will, and it has nothing to do w/ the law. I just don't think it's a healthy behavior. I agree drugs should be legalized and regulated, but I'm sure it'll be a hot day you-know-where before that ever happens.

The values of America at large are different than the values of power. In fact, much polling has shown widespread support for the legalization of marijuana -- probably far less for hardcore drugs. In 20 years, who knows? It may be legalized completely.

What are you worried about? Do they enforce marijuana laws in California?
