scan to website?
oops...I accidentally started a new thread...meant to reply to
this one...couldn't delete the new thread.
I have a copy of the history book and would be willing to
scan it to jpeg images and post it on our chapter history
website.
However, I think IHQ would throw a fit about copyright
(since I'm sure they'll want to make $$$ off the new
edition when its done!)
I'm planning to put images of the pages of the
ThKN pledge manual on there sometime this summer
(if I ever get around to it!)

Scanning the history book
As an undergrad, I was required to take a class on communications law. Here's what I can remember from that class, taken many years ago. Please do not construe this as legal advice, since I am not a lawyer, just a PR flack.
Whether or not GF would have a fit is hard to say. They must, howver, "agressivley protect" their copyright. Faiure to do so will lead to the loss of copyright protection. There was a case several years ago where Disney sued a day care center for painting Disney cartoon characters on their walls. They had to do it, because if they didn't, it would establish a precedent where anyone could use those characters in a similar manner and Disney would have no legal recourse.
The PR coup in that case was that Universal came in and offered them Hanna-Barbara characters (I think) to use instead. It made Disney look pretty bad. The use of the Universal characters was ok, though, because they had permission to use them.
As long as your site is not making money for you, GF would probably only make you remove the material. If you are making money from it, they could probably sue to recover that money, plus real and punitive damges, etc.
That's assuming that someone from GF finds your site and sees the pages, which they might not.
You might be better off to get permission from GF before you start. If you get it, everything would be kosher. Either way, you wouldn't be sticking your neck out.
Also, keep in mind that, as with a term paper, you may quote passages from a book, as long as you attribute them to their source. I'm not sure if there's a limit to how much of it you could quote.
I don't know any more than that. I just wanted to make sure

I wouldn't post pages from the History Book without permission.
I haven't asked, and probably won't for a while, since I have
alot of work to do on our chapter history website
already....unless there were an avalanche of demand

You should post it Joiner. There's all kinds of information I'd like to obtain by reading it for use right now, while i'm in school, while it's still relevant. It's a nice concept to have this as a commemeration for the centennial, but to purposely prevent brothers from obtaining knowledge from a book that hasn't been released in 10 years would be purely inexcusable.

Ice Gold, when I call InHQ and asked about a current History book, again, they told me it was out of print. They said a new one would be out for the 100 Year Cenntenial. I than asked what about all of the people that would like to have one now?
Many of us may be dead by the time a New One Comes Out!
Well, was told No, kind of go sit in the corner for being a bad boy type thing.
I dont know who will be writing it, but since, "History" is supposed to stand, there will be a lot of the same thing as in Peysers Book but just updated from then.
Actually, I found Peysers book a little disjointed as a time line and references.
Maybe just me.
If there should be input, I suggest two Brothers who I will not name now, but they know who they are.
There actually is a lot of Haze in the History Book of teh Olden days as it seems to me.
But, it is still great to read.

I don't suppose you asked them if it was OK to post images
of the current book online, free for all to see??
