1. Where do you/did you go to school? Duke University
2. How many Sororities and Fraternities are there on your campus? I am not sure how to use the Greek letters on here (sorry!) but we have:
- 9 NPC--ADPi, APhi, Chi-O, DG, DDD, KAT, KKG, AOII, PiPhi
- 11 IFC - SigEp, Sigma Chi, Delta Sig, Phi Delt, AEPi, Sigma Nu, Pike, KA, ATO, Beta, DKE
- Other--several "Selective Living Houses" (function like frats but local), a LARGE colony of Delta Tau Delta (bigger than some of our established chapters), underground/illegal chapters of Theta Chi, Kappa Sig, SAE, & Phi Psi (all had their charters revoked by their nationals/Duke within the past 2-3 years but still pledge each year & are in comparable size, if not LARGER! than the on-campus, legal frats), Psi Upsilon and Chi Psi (they belong to any group on campus but they are supposedly national) & around a dozen multicultural/NPHC frats and sororities (Theta Nu Xi, AKA, DST, Kappa Alpha Psi, ... )
The interesting thing about Duke is that our greek life seems to be MUCH different than greek life at other places in the country. Sororities and multicultural/NPHC groups don't have housing at all; IFC frats have sections within dorms (that are filled with independents/girls on other floors) right in the heart of campus. So it makes for a really interesting mix. There's also a big difference in numbers and chapter size/strength.
Purely numbers, a chapter like DKE or Phi Delt has after spring rush (we have deferred recruitment) with all four pledge classes a size of about ~20 to 25. Pike or Sigma Nu has a chapter size of about ~100 at this same time. The same thing goes for sororities. Our chapter has a spring sisterhood of ~140, where as chapter sizes range from Tridelt (~155) to AOII (~75) to Alpha Phi (~35).
Additionally, there is a growing "illegal frat" scene. Over the past dozen years (beginning in the late 1980s), fraternities have been increasingly kicked off campus & had their charters revoked. In 1989 DTD was kicked off campus for alcohol & general debauchery, as was SigEp in 1991. Both frats have succesfully "come back" on campus in the past 3 years--SigEp is now a full chapter & member of IFC and DTD is one of their Exec's shining large colonies. They both have undergone complete overhauls by their EOs and have very different members & reputations now than they did years ago.
In 2002, Phi Psi had their charter revoked; SAE lost its housing & was forced to disband/dissolve/lose their charter during the beginning of 2002 and the same thing happenned to Kappa Sig later last year. All three groups have maintained their traditions, colors, symbols, rituals, (etc) and even tried maintaining their name as they carry on illegally with off-campus housing. After Kappa Sig nationals ran newspaper ads on campus last year telling students to report "Anyone using the Kappa Sig name, traditions, crest, badge, symbols, etc." to their office, the groups changed names (to Eta Prime and Delta Phi Alpha, apparently they have something to do with both groups' histories/rituals?!?) and continue to rush. They even scheduled their own "Off-campus rush" during the school's IFC rush. Theta Chi recently lost its charter because of declining membership, alcohol, and party violations. They were having membership problems b/c of some hazing incidents. Last semester Delta Sig and Sigma Nu were both threatened with being banned from campus for alcohol/hazing incidents, luckily they made off with extensive probation. Sigma Chi received national attention for its "Viva Mexico" party. And there is a general sense of crackdown on campus on greek life.
3. Which Fraternities/Sororities do you affiliate with most? Fraternity-wise, we have mixers/events with two frats and a selective living group (local) primarily--Pike, ATO, & Wayne Manor. We also mix with Sigma Chi sometimes; as for sororities, we have an annual event with Theta (KAT). Individual members hang out ALL over campus!
4. What do you think our reputation is like on your campus?!?! We have a good reputation for being nice, smart, pretty, and fun to hang around with. We have our blonde bombshells and our girl next door Mary Janes. We hold a lot of leadership positions on campus (variety of orgs), are involved in too many to count activities, and we had the highest average GPA of any chapter in 03-04. We're a fairly visible chapter, but I think we universally just like to have FUN!
Sorry for the length of this post!
