Is there a day when they have an open house? You can pick a bunch to go to and try and meet as many houses as you can. Then you can narrow it down from there. Good luck!

usc site

i'm a student now at usc and i actually pledged a fraternity.
anyways, you really have to check it out for yourself.
i guess it's bad to de-pledge and junk but in order to actually enjoy it, you have to experience the guys for yourself. i just didn't get along too well and felt out of place. they were cool guys, but not for me. basically there are some pretty cool guys in delta tau delta, sigma chi, and delta chi. those are a few i'm thinking about pledging in.

the usc greek site is www.uscifc.com
not all the personal sites of the fraternities are up there.
but it helps.
make the right decision.

i just based mine on the parties. not the bros.
bad choice. have fun rushing and pledging.
it's pretty fun.
if you have anymore questions just ask.

'SC Greek Life is great

There are currently about 17 fraternities at USC, with Theta Chi re-colonizing anytime now. Like DeltAlum said, we just started up again in Fall 2001, and we're going strong. There's pretty much a house here to fit anyone's personal style, the only way to find out which one is for you is to wander around during pre-rush and rush week. But don't let the parties sway your decision, make sure you really get to know at least a few guys in the house. A lot of the chapter websites aren't current, so you can't really rely on those for any useful info.

Hope that helps.

Exclamation hmmmm

i am currently a junior at usc and a member of the greek population....i am not an expert in row politics and the advice I am giving could be somewhat off-base, but.... the basic frat reputations are no secret.

the delts, for instance, are still grappling with their newcomer status. not because they arent nice guys, but because they just started and have only recently managed to get rid of the strict "no alcohol" rules (which they had to follow while they were still a colony)...

zbt, kappa sig, and phi sig are all concentrated on the less hectic side of the row. zbt is a larger frat with strong brotherhood while kappa sig is much smaller and arguably less overwhelming. phi sig is the smallest frat of all, and the most insulur and mysterious...

these houses will make for a quieter row experience ...

i'm not gonna go into detail about the rest, but here is the layout, more or less...

delta chi, theta xi
---perhaps the friendliest, most down to earth
guys on the row are in these houses. the
guys get along very well and
can have a good time in any
situation, with anyone. They are not overly
preoccupied with row politics.

pi kapp, sig ep

phi psi, ae pi, sigma nu, tke

sigma chi, ato (thought these frats are in some
ways total opposites)

phi delt, lambda chi,

phi delt was unfortunately kicked off the row but continue to be a major presence, aided by the excellent parties the throw at the bungalow apartments right next to the row, lamda chi boys often are tall, athletic, and extremely attractive. the house has established very strong brotherhood without the use of a grueling pledge semester. They attract a lot of girls, which may be why they tend not to assosciate with other fraternities.

pike, beta

beta has long been a highly visible organization due to their combination of distinctive laid-back orange county style and admirable party planning skills (including hiring two live camels and a belly dancer to walk along the row to present girls' invitations to their Arabian Nights formal). Since loosing their charter, they have reinvented themselves as "stumpos raiders."
Both pike (and ato) have notably difficult pledge semesters, however, a majority of those who complete them have no complaints because the experience lays the groundwork for a remarkably close brotherhood.

sae
a very popular group made in the image of traditional
southern fraternities.

thats it, good luck.

Re: some good advice for a change

So is GPB a top house there?

i am fairly suprised at the advice you have gotten thus far.

the delts, for instance, are not really that "strong"... not because they arent nice guys but because they just started and have only recently managed to get rid of the strict "no alcohol" rules (which they had to follow while they were still a colony)... basically, there are about 27 dtds and maybe 5 are cool guys... with very few attractive girls hanging out ever as far as i can tell.

zbt, kappa sig, and phi sig are all pretty much the same ....ignored. zbt is a large collection of nerdy types while kappa sig is much smaller and arguably cooler but still socially impaired. phi sig is the lamest frat of all, with barely enough members to keep their house... and they like to think of themselves as kind of like a "secret society" (....uhh, cool).

avoid those houses unless you want a quiet row experience, and i cant imagine theta chi being any different.

i'm not gonna go into detail about the rest, but here is the rest of hierarchy from bottom to top, give or take...

7) delta chi, theta xi
---more cool (or at least less obnoxious in
some cases) guys in these houses than the
bottom tier but still out of the loop

6) pi kapp, sig ep

5) phi psi, ae pi, sigma nu

4.) sigma chi, ato (thought these frats are in some
ways total opposites)

3.) phi delt, lambda chi, (kicked off the row, not really worth
joining as they are on the decline, lamda
chi are pretty boys literally but the get a lot
of girls)

2.) pike, beta (beta would be the best but it was also booted off
the row, pike -and ato- have really scary pledge
semesters)
1.) sae (still have a monetary requirement, all wealthy guys and
athletes, the favorite of the sororities)

thats it, good luck.
if i offended anyone, i apologize.

Well you should perhaps reconsider how you talk about fraternities and sororities on this website. Some of us know the reputations of even your sorority at even your campus and can come up with a thing or two to say that isn't as nice as "upper-middle".

I have been similarly warned through private messages, and I apologize. I realize my post was unfair and inappropriate. I will refrain from such negativity in the future.

I don't see why folks ever get worked up about people giving their opinions on how successful they think certain groups on their campus are.

They're only the opinion of one person.

If the Sigma Nu chapter there only as like 20 guys and the SAE chapter has 150, there is probably a reason that those 20 guys chose Sigma Nu and not SAE. I'd wager that there are plenty of guys in "lesser" groups that turned down bids for your higher ranked ones.

The point is, if you are looking to rush a house, the size, trophies, etc. don't really mean anything. It's how you fit in with each chapter that really matters.

People going through rush need to understand that what they are doing is essentially choosing or being chosen by a group of people that they will spend not only the next 4 years with, but the rest of their lives. In 20 years, you won't care how many trophies your fraternity had, just the kinds of people that you are now associated with because of them.

The problem with going off of what this one person said is that you are using her opinion only. I've been an advisor at USC for the past 8 years (and I also attended grad school there) and I can tell you that a lot of people would say something totally different.

You should not limit yourself based on anyone's opinion when you go through rush. Meet the guys to the best of your ability and make a decision based on the people who you get to know and your own experiences.

Good luck!
