How could you not know who George Harrison was?
There's just no excuse for that (I say as I look up at the Beatles calendar on my desk).

Granted, I know the names of the Beatles members, but I've never been a fan. I would guess that many kids today know who the Beatles are, but perhaps not their names.
To answer the original question, I didn't know who Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen were til I read this thread.

1) Sid Vicious was actually not the original bass player for the Sex Pistols (who are big sell outs by the way b/c they were signed to EMI-big label and signing to a big label is just not, by definition, punk) He was a member of the Sex Pistol fan club and eventually joined even though he had no music talent or experience. I am pretty sure his efforts did not make it in the recording studio and someone else played for him. I am also pretty sure he didn't "write" anything he played. I believe the other guys did most of that.-could be wrong though.
2) he was so bad at "playing" the bass, they painted numbers on it for him
3) they often un plugged him b/c he was so awfull
4) Nancey Spurgenon (sp?) was a junkie and is now thought to have been a schizophrenic-literally. If you read the book her mother wrote, she was a problem since the day she was born. In and out of mental hospitals, rehabs etc. running away from home, slutting around etc.
5) Sid Vicious' mother was a junkie-hence why he was a junkie and why she bought him dope the day he died. It was like her gift to him.
6) Courtney Love auditioned for the part of Nancey Sprugeon in that movie and was PISSED OFF to only get the part of the friend. Her whole look/style is centered around being Nancey. I saw an interview with her once and she talked about how she called the caster/director of that movie constantly telling him-(I AM Nancey! Can't you see it??)
7) yeah-they died close together and it was alluded to that he killed her because it's all a mystery and no one really knows and they were both all smacked out.
8) Sid Vicious apparently was already a drug user when he met Nancey, but she really influenced his whole becoming a total junkie. She thought it was cool.

Years ago the University of Colorado football team was playing in a game at Anaheim Stadium before the regular season. We (the TV station I worked for) did a coach's show called "The Bill McCartney Show."
We were doing the show live in front of the Magic Castle at Disneyland -- and they had put up a sign on the set inviting people to come and see the show.
It is amazing how many people asked me if the Beatles were going to be there that evening.

I totally agree with the AOTT with the wisdom to say that it should be a rite of passage to know the names of each Beatle. Let's face it, pop culture as we know it changed with their rise.
When George passed away, I was so upset, as I realized that the two remaining Beatles are the two I've already seen. The chances of me ever seeing John or George are, at best, very limited!

I'm only 21, and I knew who Sid and Nancy were. Like Munchkin, my friends and I refer to a super-dramatic relationship as a "Sid & Nancy."
