I cannot speak for non secret fraternities,because my organization is not one, although there are some members of Greekchat that are in some non secret organizations. Maybe they will read this and respond and better explain why they believe that their rituals should be open to public.
However, on behalf of Greeks that keep their rituals secret, we feel that in order to keep these beautiful and ceremonies sacred, we have to keep it only to our members. We cannot breathe a word about it to ANYONE outside the organization. This secrecy and the knowledge that it's only "us" who knows what goes on in our rituals is a great part of the brother/sisterhood that binds us together. These things that we share only within our chapter make us different from other non-greeks and other greeks (since other greeks would have their own different set of rituals). For example, think of it as sharing a deep secret with your best friend. The fact that you trust your friend enough to share your secret shows that you value and love him maybe as more than a friend, like a brother perhaps...and years later you guys can talk about how u shared this one secret years ago and how up to this day you haven't told a word of it to anyone---the thought of how u guys are the only ones in the world who know this secret makes u feel kinda special right? I dont know if I made the right analogy but I tried my best!
Same goes when you meet members of other chapters for the first time. The knowledge that you guys went through the same things, know the same history and stuff would give u guys an instant connection that no strangers meeting for the first time would otherwise have.
