I can't speak for other national sorority alcohol policies, but ours has stated that we may not have any alcohol related functions without a bartender and carding and all that stuff anyways. The only way alcohol free housing policy has changed our group is that we can't have fraternity mixers in their houses anymore. I agree that it is hard, but they are doing this at many campuses, and it's working.

And as for this X amount of sisters at an open party means it's co-sponsored by your organization, well, as we like to say about events...if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, the law will find it to be a duck. By having a specific number in your alcohol free housing policy, the sorority/fraternity is in a stickier situation. It puts strict guidelines on events, and it can make "partying" a bit more difficult.

Many greek organizations have taken a stand on alcohol free housing policies, but many universities are taking much stronger, stricter stances on this. Many college panhellenics are passing alcohol free housing policies, as are entire universities. I hate to say this, but this is the new movement. It's a shame it has had to come to these kinds of rules, but Animal House just doesn't fly anymore.

This has been a very informative thread, and I like the tone of it. Not having gone to a school with houses, i never understood the desire to go get drunk at a someone's organization, especially if I was interested in becoming a member. I guess I don't have the proper frame of reference to understand.
