You know why? Because there are all these websites that say that no sorority requires recs. And they don't mention how huge the early cuts are so they won't offend moms who think their darlings wouldn't possibly receive cuts.

And we have seen on multiple FB sites the great debate of recs or no recs needed over and over and over. I have seen moms comment on how unfair it is to require them. Seriously. I have seen moms who say " well, so and so didn't have recs and got a bid."when they could not possibly know if the girl did or did not have one. I have seen moms of members rushing on the sorority side for the first time claiming their daughters say their sororities don't use recs and the daughters know this because they have never seen one. We have tried to explain about rush committees and rec committes and how recs are not trotted out In Front of the entire chapter, to no avail.

Just now looking back to read the first part....and I can also tell you that college Panhellenics EMPHASIZE that recs aren't required. And of course panhellenics is the authority and what do we know?
I also run 3 sorority recruitment Facebook pages at two big SEC colleges, and there are several moms not only insisting their daughter got a bid without recs, but also encouraging other mothers not get them!
And no, they don't listen when we tell them that, while their fabulous daughter is beautiful, sweet, award-winning and smart with a GPA of 3.8, there are 2499 girls who are all beautiful, sweet, award-winning with GPAS of 3.9 and beyond.

Following Georgia closely as well as one of my sisters has her daughter going through this year. She's got her recs, is a legacy at at least our chapter...so hoping it all goes well for her! Fingers crossed she finds a home she loves, even if it isn't ours.

I told my Twizzler when she was at Northwestern that even though it said recs weren’t needed, they were most certainly needed.

Now I’m at Alabama and I have old friends writing to me to try to ask me for last minute letters when rush started days ago for some.

Holy COW DistantXOcousin. HOLY COW! is all I got for that.

SO now my brain is working on the "bigger picture" (the problem has been identified and described so now what are the treatments/solutions?), and to me that includes NPC doing a better job of informing pnms and parents. See where I'm going with this?

I still stand by my closing statement, I hope your pnm has a good outcome. Still SMH at the "shock" though. You just need to spend a little time on youtube, looking at videos, and you will have a pretty good picture of what's at stake.

Reminding myself that we're dealing with 18 year olds and there's that to figure into the equation.

I see exactly where you’re going, AZTheta!
It’s changed a lot since I was in school but, at the same time, it hasn’t changed at all. I understand that the NPC is trying to make recruitment more inclusive and available to everyone but I’m of the opinion that they should flat out tell you that you need recs, when the girls who don’t know that much about recruitment turn up without letters and are thrown into the mix with the girls who do, it just makes the divide that much larger.

Yes!

I would go ahead and write that Bama rec. it's late, but someone "might" take a look at it. It's worth a shot.

I got a request from 2 friends at Alabama who have daughters going through and 3! at Oklahoma. I’ll write them but at this point, I think it’s like throwing a cotton ball into a waterfall to try and stop the flow.

And another thing....those videos that PNMs are putting their faith in are made by second-semester freshman or sophomores who either haven't been through recruitment on the sorority side, or have only been through once. They don't even know their own sorority's policies and procedures, never mind al the behind-closed-doors matching, research, etc. that goes into the mix.

If y'all's are electronic, I'd go on and do them. It will drop them in the appropriate place with the chapters so will show easily on their end.

Maybe it's just a strange concept to me as at my school chapter members can't leave the house at all during rounds so seeing them walk out with the girls, talking in the yard, etc is very foreign to me. Also, seems hot!! One of the best parts of being on the recruiting side was being in the A/C all day...

Yes and no. Where they are waiting to go in-it's all PNMs and RCs. Coming out, some show members on the porch. Others are escorted to the street sidewalk by members who stand there and sing or wave goodbye. But rushing per se is not what you see....southern belle politeness at its best!
