Thumbs up Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers is awesome! My mom and I have been on it for 4 weeks and we've lost about 17 pounds together. It teaches you that nothing is forbidden and you shouldn't starve yourself. I've been exercising, but nothing extreme (i.e. I'm not at the gym 7 days a week for 3 hours!) and I'm eating very well. I feel fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone! By the way, a few meetings ago I met a Kappa from GA Southern!

Some of my sisters started doing Weight Watchers this semester, and they look amazing! I like the fact that you HAVE to eat all your points before you go to bed. It's a good way to tell you that you shouldn't starve yourself. These girls are happier than I've ever seen them and if I was ever going to do some kind of weight loss program, this would probably be it.

The most imortant thing to remember about weight loss is that it is a lifestyle change. A diet is just that, a diet. Even by drinking all your water every day, and doing moderate excercise, you can begin to get healthier. It's all about moderation!

I have seen these commercials for those weight loss drugs. I am weary of them due to their side effects. Anyone remember Phen-Fen (or is it Fen-Phen?)?

I used to have a chiropractor who tried to put me on the Atkins Diet. I ignored him knowing that I could never follow the guidlines. I can't let go of my carbs (pasta, rice, cereal and chocolate) and hate to be deprived. Even acquaintances that were on or have friends that did Atkins advised me not to do it.

I have noticed the informercial for The Six Week Body Makover. I would like to know, for my curiosity, if anyone has tried this.

All of the sage thoughts in this post make me pine for the days when I was
green, before I became jaded..

If you miss soda on your new eating plan, try Crystal Light. In 8 ounces, there is only 5 calories. It has no sugar, fat, carbs, anything. The best part is that it's yummy!

Someone mentioned running vs. the ellipitical machine - what do you think the biggest difference between the two are?

For me, running is a better workout. It just depends how hard you work on the elliptical. Supposedly running and the elliptical machine can provide equivalent workouts if you push yourself hard on each. I would tend not to work hard enough on the elliptical to make it a truly tough workout.

The elliptical is no-impact, while running can mess up your knees and ankles if you keep at it for years and years.

I prefer running over the elliptical machine. However, when I hop on the elliptical machine, I "peddle" forward for half of the time with a strong resistance and then I "peddle" backwards with a lower resistance for the same amount of time. I can definately feel a difference in my body the next day! Plus, I tone my hamstrings and butt!

You would have to work VERY hard on the elliptical machine to burn an equivalent amount of calories to running. The "calories burned" count on elliptical machines usually overestimates by 200-300 calories per hour (perhaps even more, depending on the model), so you're usually not getting an accurate calorie count.

I know that for me, running is the only thing I've tried that makes me drop weight -- and I do drop LOTS of pounds when I'm running.

While the elliptical machine is "no impact," it can still cause knee injuries if you go over a certain rotations per minute (I forget the actual number). And because it forces your body into what is an unnatural stride for some people, I've heard that it can cause other weird joint injuries as well.

I LOVE the elliptical machine . . . but I love running more.

Thanks for the ellipical machine advice, ladies!

Can anyone suggest a good running program for someone just starting? Running on the treadmill is a huge challenge for me because I smoke (bad me), and I get frustrated pretty easily.

My former piano teacher should be the poster child for WW. She's lost 131 lbs in a little over a year. She looks so good. She's still what you'd call "big" but not nearly so much as she was a couple years ago (in the neighborhood of 400 lbs). Now I'm sure she's down in the low 300s, maybe upper 200s. For a lady of her size that's such a victory. My sis tried it for a while and did lose some weight, about 20 lbs in 2 months. I think if I ever had a weight problem I'd go there first.

Running for Moxie

Here's what you do. It sounds so easy, but it's harder than it seems, especially if you haven't been working out (and you smoke)

Week 1: Every other day, walk 5 min and run for 2, alternating 5 reps for a total of 35 min. You may walk or run at any pace you choose, but do keep moving no matter what.

Week 2: Every other day, walk 5 min and run 4, 5 reps. Concentrate more on speed walking than running fast

Week 3: Same as 2, but 4 min of walking and 6 min running, 4 reps

Week 4: Walk 3 min, run 6, 4 reps and this time walk at least 3.5 mph and run at least 5 mph (get on a treadmill to gauge this out)

Continue cutting down on walking until you can run at least 15 min at a time w/ no walk breaks. Aim to run at least 4x a week, for 30-45 min a day. Don't forget to stretch after your workout.

The zone isn't really a good balanced diet especially if you're looking to work out. Get that book by Marilu Henner (her first one, can't remember the title) where she discusses revamping your eating habits. I read it after my mom did and even w/ only doing a couple things that she suggested, I lost like 20 lbs.

Do WEIGHT TRAINING!
If you have more muscle you will burn more calories
1# of muscle burns 35 calories a day, just to stay alive
1# of fat burns 2 calories a day!

I LOVE my FIRM workout tapes

swissmiss, thanks for the running/walking advice. After losing all the pounds that I want, I am trying to firm things up. Walking definitely helps.
