I came from a school of 700 (and a grad class of 60) to a school of 30, 000 so I knew joining a sorority would be an excellent way to meet people. So it was definately local and I totally meshed with my chapter; I wasn't concerned with the whole international thing, I justed wanted to find a sorority at UBC that I fit in with.
It's just an added bonus that I have met sisters from other chapters and become good friends with them .

Mostly the local chapter. We had five sororities, one of which was local, and I didn't know anything about their national reps at the time.
However, the local seemed to be to be a little ... well, amateurish. Their crest didn't look like much, their pref ritual was just weird and didn't impart much to me ... you get the idea. I also didn't connect with most of the women, even though they were nice. But I felt that I'd rather be part of a national organization.
And AXD didn't have the strongest national rep of the chapters on campus, as I know now - but they definitely had the strongest in Ohio, where we have a million chapters.

I wanted to join a sorority that was strong nationally so that I could go just about anywhere in the US and find sisters. Alpha Chi is that, plus I loved the girls and still do. So it was the local chapter and the sorority in general that made me want to join.

My sorority was a local when I joined, so it was definitely the local chapter that convinced me to join. The fact that they didn't have a national affiliation didn't bother me... I did miss the idea of finding sisters anywhere in the world, but on the other hand, our dues were a lot lower I'm still glad we affiliated with AEPhi, though.

I joined Phi Mu because of the local chapter as well as the national reputation. The girls came first, and then I grew to love Phi Mu and our history as a national organization. Even if Phi Mu nationally didn't have a good reputation and no one wanted to be one, I would still love my sisters!

Well, like some of you guys I didn't research my sorority, the info meeting just seemed like something to do on a boring Monday night. When I found out how great the girls were, I ended up joining. So technically, I joined because of the local chapter, however, as time passed I got to value the national side of our sorority. I am lucky to have been picked to be a part of a sisterhood that is as strong locally as it is nationally. I see struggling local fraternities and sororities, and I feel grateful that I was given the oppurtunity to be part of something that is so well-rounded.
Just food for thought...

I chose my chapter because of both the local chapter and the national philanthropy. I loved the girls locally, and I am fully supported to finding a cure for Alzheimers disease. That combination of factors made my choice a snap.

During rush, I joined Chi O for a number of reasons, mainly bc of the chapter. I felt at home with the girls and their sisterhood was clearly a strong one I hoped to be part of one day. I also remember hearing during rush how strong Chi O was nationally, how it was the largest sorority, etc, so that was another plus. I knew that Chi O had lots of alum chapters everywhere, which I knew I could benefit from in the long run. I guess you could say everything played a part.

I pledged Delta Zeta solely because I loved the sisters and because of the great reputation of the chapter. It wasn't until years later when I became active as an alumna that I fully appreciated our strength on a national level.

Back when I went thru Rush, there were no PCs so definitely no Internet searches, lol!! I had heard of a couple of the other sororities on campus but not AGD. The sisters were very friendly and I knew that I had found a new home. Decades later, it's still home.

I would say a combination of both..the only reason I had even been familiar with DeltaSig is because they were huge at the previous campus I had been at the year before..and when I saw the rush table at the school I joined I realized it was a sign..I had wanted to rush my freshmen year but I had to wait until sophmore year that sucked...but anyways I would say both...national..and I actually researched the fraternities background of the internet!

The local chapter. I knew nothing about fraternites going through rush. I went with TKE because they rushed me hard and every single brother remembered my name and made me feel at home. No other fraternity came close.
