I usually play on the internet or go to bed-that is the luxury of working nights.

Ask others within your area if there is something you can help with, if there isn't then check outside your area. Do something that increases your value to the company. You are in the real world now, this isn't school anymore so don't expect things to be spoon fed to you as though you were an animal in a zoo. Initiative is a valuable commodity. You will be seen as a 'go-getter' rather than someone wasting company resources by playing on the internet. If there is a lay off who do you think that the company will keep? Someone who has looked for more to do and offered to help or someone who spent their days surfing?

I'm bored just thinking about that.
Anymore fun websites anyone can suggest?

Be careful about surfing the web while on the job. We got a memo about internet usage about a month ago - but today we had a meeting about it. In most companys there is an I.S. guy who goes through reports generated by your computers internet connection that tells which sites you go to and how long you spend on them - which the time spent x how much you make an hour - can spell big trouble if you are costing the company money by surfing. Its not just porn sites anymore...its chats, shopping sites etc. I hesitated to log into GC today bc as it says in the name its Greek CHAT. Just be careful because the way the economy is - and how scare jobs are now - its not worth risking your employment

You know how tired I get of asking for work around here? For TWO YEARS my boss has told me, "I'm busy with project X now, but when I'm done I'll think about it." I've gone to classes, I've read every manual the company has, I've read industry magazines and books, I've asked everyone else for work, I've volunteered in other departments - but there's only so much you can do. If my company insists I be here 40 hours a week for what is a 20 hour a week job, I can't find 20 extra hours of work, period. I'm not superhuman, and, yes, I am looking for a new position. Don't assume we web-surfers are surfing as a first resort!

Luckily my boss doesn't really care as long as the patients are not neglected and whatever keeps me awake. I am stuck in this building for 13 and sometimes 18 hrs so he is pretty lenient.

Sorry, Volgirl, didn't mean to jump on you. It makes me nervous, not having enough work ... I feel so expendable, and my company isn't doing too well right now, either! I'm just annoyed that it doesn't make any difference what I do. I would like to work hard and get rewarded for it ... I'm sure it doesn't look good if I'm surfing, even if that's all I have to do.

Funny, though, we have this blocking software. It doesn't block this site, but yesterday it was blocking the Regional Airline Association press releases! I call the help desk, "Uh, I need this page to do my job." So they say, "Yeah, it looks clean, but there's no one around authorized to unblock it; you'll have to wait until Monday." Sigh.

Believe me - I am an avid surfer while on the job - I have a problem with time management - I get an assignment and do it right away - so Im usually bored to death by Wednesday and until the end of the week. I just wanted to post the new rules at *my* job - bc they may be secret rules at other peoples jobs. I feel for you FuzzieAlum - and Ive been in your position! Hope things look up soon for everyone (myself included)

You guys are lucky that you get to surf the net at work. We have internet access at are work stations, but we can only use it to access the company intranet. We have 2 computers in the break room, but I hesitate to log on to GC there. Big Brother is always watching(sigh)

Anyway, how I stay sane at work (I work from 1pm-midnight 4 days a week) is I read and talk to my co-workers. My boss is going to let me take some free Sabre classes so I can learn a little bit of Sabre.

I'm sorry! I know Sabre, and let me tell you, it sure doesn't keep me amused! But it is useful.

I have to have web access, because my job requires me to keep up with airline/aviation news, so I have to be able to get to various news sites.
