The newspaper was QUOTING the president verbatim.
IF the reporter could easily tell that the person was being sarcastic then perhaps a disclaimer might have been in order. We don't know that to be the case.
If not, are you suggesting a disclaimer for every time someone is quoted? Something like, "I couldn't tell, but it is possible the subject of this interview was jerking my chain, but I'm not a mind reader, so take his comments with a grain of salt."
Give me a break. The newspaper and the university are not at fault here. Nor is the Nationals.
The reality is that this guy painted himself into a corner. He admitted to serving alcohol in a dry house. He admitted to hirng a stripper AFTER he recanted his story about cock fights, etc. And, as someone pointed out above, even some of the regulars on this forum wondered for at least a moment if the chapter really did all of the things he initially clamed and later denied.
It's tragic to see an old established chapter closed (which, as I read the story it hasn't been yet -- but that's being considered). What it still always comes down to is what individuals and chapters don't want to realize. If you break the rules and get caught -- whether by the media, the cops, the university, the alumni, the parents -- whomever -- you run the risk of getting closed down.
Why keep playing Russian Roulette with something that important?
Oh, and by the way, if you have a problem that warrants the attention of any of the above, be sure your spokesperson knows how to deal with it in a professional manner.
Try to deflect blame or criticize actions any way you want, but in finality a guy who was the highest executive officer of the chapter, speaking officially for them on the record, potentially dug the chapter's grave.
Someone said above that one man's stupdity is another man's bad judgement. This was both.
