The blonde elf-archer's name is Legolas. His real name is Orlando Bloom.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Tolkien- and I really loved the books- Which I read just prior to the movie comming out. It was beautifully done, with stunning visual effects and it turned out to be very realistic. Since I've read the books, I can't anwser James' question, however, I can say..that I wasn't at all dissapointed in the fact they skipped over a lot or changed it around a little. Face it, if they stuck EVERYTHING in those books into the movie- not only would it be five or so hrs long, but it would also cost probably twice as much. lol.

And the idea about Arwen...well, women really don't play a big part in the book- Pretty much just Arwen, Galadriel, and Eowyn. And Arwen just looks pretty most of the time, and Eowyn is the one that really kicks ass. OH- for the record, Eowyn isn't being taken out of the movie...her character will be played by a miranda somebody...so that's good..I'd hate Eowyn to be replaced- plus it would cause hella problems with Faramir, and Aaragorn, in the end.

-love,
Jess

Question

Am I in the dark ages? The first time I ever heard of TLOTR was when I heard some people in my church debating if it was Christian or Satanic, a few weeks ago. Did the book or movie come out first?
If the book came out first, I understand, don't enjoy reading fiction.

Curiouss - The Hobbit (which is like a prequel to TLOTR) was originally published in 1937. Then The Lord of the Rings, which is made up of three books, was published as follows: The Fellowship of the Ring (1954) The Two Towers (1955) and The Return of the King (1956).

I am also a huge fan of Tolkien. I don't think that the books or the movies lend themselves to one sex over another. I thought that the movie was absolutely incredible and that they did a good job of not making it too violent (although the Orcs were really disgusting). I know that the next two movies will be more violent, but hope that they maintain the same tone.

James, to answer your question, I went to see the movie with my best friend who had not read the books. She was able to follow the movie and loved it. We both agreed that they did a really good job explaining the history of middle earth in the beginning of the movie. As a matter of fact, the movie convinced her to read the books.

As for the changes b/w the book and the movie, I didn't have a problem with most of them b/c the movie would have been way too long if it followed the book completely. There were two that pissed me off though. The first was the elimination of Tom Bombadil. I was really looking forward to seeing Tom Bombadil on the big screen! The second was the change to the end where Aragorn tells Frodo that it's okay to leave. I don't understand why they changed that part.

I can't wait to see the Ents. I don't know how I'm going to make it until next December!

Thumbs down

i went to see the movie 2 days ago. I didnt really like it all that much. There were parts that were okay but i thought the rest was very boring and long. I also didnt think any of the guys in the movie were cute.

I didnt really want to go see it by choice but didnt make a big deal about going to watch it. Its not my kind of movie, and i didnt like how it didnt end.... i didnt know it was part of a trilogy until afterwards!

LOL....Yeah, the orks did look pretty gross. I absolutely loved the movie. I saw it in Puerto Rico on our first night. We were pretty tired but it was well worth it. It had spanish subtitles and I loved those parts where the characters went through those radical changes.(When they were greedy for the ring). Those parts definitely kept me alert. LOL I loved the elvish subtitled parts. They were really cool.

My boyfriend and I went to see LOTR this past weekend. I thought it was wonderful. He read all of the books years ago, but I was only familar with The Hobbit so the storyline was very new to me. We both loved the movie and can't wait for the 2nd one to be released! Last night, my bf dug out his Tolkien collection and started re-reading the books.

I went to the movie specifically to see the cute guys!!! The plot was a bonus, yes, but I spent most of my time trying to decide who to drool over, Legolas or Aragorn!
