Transferring colleges?

Thank you all for your words of advice. I did have rec letters for about 3/4 of the houses, but the thing is, so does everyone else. And about half of the girls in my rush group were at least a legacy to one sorority, if not double and triple legacies.

I spoke with my sister about all of this, and she jokingly told me I was going through a mid-college crisis, and that things would work out for me. Y'all are reiterating that, so I'm much more comfortable with my decision. I sometimes just get caught up in the could've/should've/would've scenarios, and I need to learn to better redirect my thoughts to the positive. I guess I just got to thinking "what if I did this..." but after really considering it, I don't think it would be the best life decision for me.

And definitely agree with AZTheta, LadyLonghorn's post should be saved because I know I'm not the only one who has gone through this, and the way she put things really made me feel better.

Also, I want to let you in on a giant secret: Most of us are disillusioned by our orgs by sophomore or junior year. While we love our sisters, and the values of the sorority and all that, the "OMGTHISSORORITYISTHEGREATESTTHINGTHATSEVERHAPPENE DTOME" feeling wears off much, much faster than you might realize from the outside.

Oh shucks. Feel free to keep it a refer to it whenever you think it's needed. I'm sincerely happy that I was able to help put things in perspective.

Also, to those who are harping about recs: Yes, recs and letters of support are needed at UT, but only because most houses will drop a pnm after the first set if she doesn't have at least one. However, they do not guarantee a pnm will receive an invite to the second set. Plenty of pnms with multiple recs and letters get dropped from chapters after the first round.

Just sharing my transfer experience with you: I originally went to a smaller private school with a very strong (...maybe overbearing) greek system. I pledged and became an active member, but I found out I really didn't like the small, gossipy campus and I decided to change majors to one that was not strong at that school. I transferred to a large public university and affiliated with my sorority's chapter there. I am so glad I did...

With that said...UT is an incredible school! You may not realize just what you are missing until you are gone. With a school that big you are sure to find some focus besides the Greek scene. An earlier poster pointed out that for the size of UT, the Greek system is rather small, relatively speaking, especially when you consider the size of Austin, as well. Why not immerse yourself in an activity that has something to do with what you want to do professionally?

One last thought (as I fight a bad sinus infection keeping me awake...): are any chapters colonizing at UT? Some of the other posters might be more in the know on that. It certainly sounds like you have some of the qualities a new chapter might be looking for.

No. There are no expansion plans now or any time in the foreseeable future at UT. The situation on the UT campus has been extensively discussed here. There are ample resources on Greekchat to inform you that a campus is expanding. Do you not think someone here who's familiar with UT might have mentioned colonization if it were so? The search function is your friend. Please use it before throwing out random advice about a situation with which you are unfamiliar.

No part of this is giving advice. She even deferred to others who were "in the know," so I don't see what the hell you're talking about.

Others have said it already texaslonghorn03, but let me please emphasize that it is in your best interests to stay at UT Austin and graduate with UT Austin on your resume.

This job market we are in right now is unlike anything I have ever seen, and it is unlikely (hopefully) that it will be repeated in my lifetime. Graduating from UT with a degree aimed at a solid career (meaning don't major in psychology unless you want to be a psychologist) is not a guarantee you will get a job- for the next few years it means you are less likely to have to wait a year or two to find a good job that will get you on your way to a solid career.

Even in a strong economic time, my advice would be the same as Lady Longhorn's- you have lots of options socially at UT and the networking plus the fact you were there will be of aid to you as long as you live in Texas.

But right now, it is all the more important to stay put. Graduating from UT you will have many social and networking opportunities, and you will have an edge in the job market. Transferring to a school with an easier Greek system means you take a pretty big step down academics-wise since pretty much all of the good Texas schools that have Greek systems happen to have competitive Greek systems, plus rushing as a transfer and upperclassman your options in rush go down dramatically. It is too big a risk for what you would have to give up.
