Except Jersey. It's ok to wear jorts in Jersey.*

*And by ok, I mean people won't make fun of you, because they're also wearing jorts...not ok, as in fashionably acceptable.

Some guitar players I have known keep their nails longer than what would be considered normal for males. If that's the case, cut them for rush - they'll grow back.

And some people are just really bad about cutting their nails (fingers and toes).

Ah- so that is what jorts means. Back in my time we called them boyfriend shorts- and it was probably the #1 way clothing-wise to never get a bid at my house. Luckily, there was no Abercrombie back then.

Basically nothing I can say hasn't already been said except that it might help to ask them about their organization (basic stuff like history, what sort of stuff they do, traditions, etc) for two reasons. First, you want to get a feel for what sort of group they are and what they hold to be important. Second, in my experience my brothers love talking about our org, and it makes us feel like you're an intelligent person for inquiring.

One thing I will say is do keep an open mind. At a massive competitive SEC school like Florida you'll likely hear words like "top-tier," "middle-tier," etc thrown around a bit. This is mostly crap, and almost always relative to the individual's taste and opinions. Find the people you like and bugger what anyone else says about them; if you're with people you enjoy being around, you'll have fun regardless.

This is a lie. A lie. A lie.

It's NEVER okay to wear jorts, even in Jersey.

Thanks all for the replies.
One last question...how superficial is the fraternity recruitment at your schools? I'm a decent looking guy, very athletic, and pretty ripped (175 on bench and I weigh 145).

You gotta get your weight up, Broseph Stalin.

And other than clothes, I would imagine it's not too superficial although I've never gone to school there.

Again it depends on the fraternity and even the individual. Like for example my chapter is really active in intramurals so having an athletic guy would be a plus, but its not everything. Honestly I'd think your personality and how you interact with the brothers and other PNMs will factor into it more than your looks and athletic ability.

I am looking to join a fraternity in the fall (a few that I have in mind and those that I have hung out with over summer semester)
Just a few questions:
Is there a do/don't wear type deal for rush? I've been wearing clothes like Polo/A&Fitch/Lacoste/Aeropostale...is there certain things I shouldn't wear?
What are some topics to avoid when asking the brothers questions about the fraternity? I know topics like politics, religion, diseases/abortion are things to avoid but are there certain things I should ask them? Should I talk to them about my interests?
Does being a minority put me at a disadvantage? (See below)
As for me, I'm very into sports (mainly basketball and football), upper-middle class, asian, finance major, social/friendly, shy at first.
If you haven't figured out by username, I go to Florida
Thanks
You should also consider the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC Council) at UF. The Council is a very close knit family mostly of greek sororities and fraternities. Accepting every single culture and every single race. Where being Asian is actually an Amazing Thing instead of a hindrance. I never understood that.

I can get objectively get you in contact with a couple of leaders in those organizations if your interested.

LOL I never understand why being from another culture could possibly be a problem in joining a Greek Lettered Organization.
