My fraternity, and the others in my town as well as the high school sororities, were National organizations: we all had old rituals and chapters elsewhere.
HS fraternities exploded in number in the 1920s and survived both the Depression and WW2 in good shape, and they rebounded fully after WW2. They began to lose steam with the advent of the rock 'n' roll age and were almost swallowed by the turmoil of the 1960s and early 70s. By the late 1970s, few chapters survived of perhaps 5 or 6 HS fraternities, and most of those chapters had folded by the end of the 1980s.
Some of the HS fraternities that I know that had National organizations are, in alphbetical order: Delta Sigma, Gamma Delta Psi, Phi Kappa, Phi Sigma Chi, Phi Sigma Epsilon, Sigma Phi Omega, Theta Kappa Omega.

What was the HS fraternity like? This sounds interesting.

Clearly, this is an old thread but we had a fraternity and a sorority in my high school. The sorority was all white and threw little functions and such. It was kind of a big deal, I know they have several chapters throughout the state, and that the majority of the members went on to be a part of college sororities. They also had a black fraternity named the betas. They were big as well. I recall going to another high schools prom (a majority black highschool unlike my own) and the MC would "throw his love" to the Beta's there.

My great-aunt and grandmother were members of high school sororities. I have my aunt's sorority ring from 1925-- her letters were 'gamma delta phi' and I've not been able to find any info about them. There are some old photos of her and her sisters wearing the old-fashioned black bathing suits with their letters! I hope those photos haven't been lost to the ages because they're so cute--- I'll have to ask my mom if she has them.
My dad told me that my grandmother and her sorority sisters used to have a lot of get togethers and activities when he was growing up.
I learned all of this years after I pledged ADPi-- so much for being the first sorority woman in the family!

There were greek groups at my high school that were known by the adminstration for years. They started folding up over the years so that by the time I graduated in 96 there were only 2 actually in existance. By that point it was more of social thing then anything else. Normally one was members of the National Honor Society and the other had cheerleaders and dance team members in it. Neither was very active.

Thats what I meant by sponsor high school students being sponsored by a "collegiate sorority"

I know that this is an old thread, but since it was brought to the top.......
I have to make a clarification. See, here's the problem with other people making statments about organizations they don't belong to.........Sigma Gamma Rho's YOUTH group is called Rhoers. They are in no way shape or form a high school sorority. The specific nature of these programs vary based on the sponsoring chapter, but the main goal is to mentor young women and help them to see that there is a life beyond high school.
High school fraternities and sororities are a whole 'nother thing! My high school explictly banned them. I will let someone who has more initmate knowledge of these groups speak on them.

The red made it so I didn't respond sooner, so thank you VERY much for responding. Knowledge is power and misinformation has led to a lot of deaths.

Way Off Topic
I know this has nothing to do with this thread exactly, but this is something I've noticed quite often on GC in general. When someone brings back a thread from years ago, it gets pointed out how old it is. But when someone starts a new topic that has already been discussed, they are told to search for older threads. It's probably not the same people doing both things, but its like you can never win!

When someone bumps a thread and says "Hey, I was just thinking about this topic the other day, and so I searched and found this...anyone have anything else to add?" we don't think that's weird, and probably would not point out the age of the thread.
When someone quotes the OP (original poster) and tries to give them personal advice, or, better yet goes off on a complete tirade on them, then we think the person is weird and point out the age of the thread, and the fact that the OP probably doesn't care about "Does Chi Zeta at Billy Bob U haze?" because they probably have their PhD by then.

P.S. I know this because I happen to be a sorority sister and President of The Panhellenic Council at my university.

Wow.... so I guess the only real fraternities are those that are a part of NPC and IFC? That's incredibly closed minded of you.

Being that the post you quoted is almost 7 years old, and almost 7 years ago this place was running rampant with trolls like TauCutie9, I wouldn't put much weight in that post. Not really worth getting panties bunched.
Just something to consider.

First, you need to know it would not be a sorority/fraternity. It would be an extracarricular group/org/activity at the school that would have stipulations, i.e., grades!
I would suggest getting people together who may be interested (on your own time) then proposing the idea to the administration along with the name of all the interested people. I would also suggest running the idea across a few teachers who may consider the idea of being a sponsor for the group.
Most high schools here have organization like this; mademoiselles, gents, ladies of distinction. I even sponsor a group of 5th & 6th grade girls who compete in different step competitions, have sleepovers, attend functions like college stepshows and football games, etc.
Its a good idea if you have purpose behind it.

You refer to your "Band frat" as "Inc." - are you actually incorporated, or did you just think it sounds cool?

Please know you are NOT in a fraternity sweetie! I see your fire but after you graduate... that's it, your principal probably isnt even going to want you on campus anymore, you'll be trespassing!
Please dont get it twisted, we did all the same thing in high school, hell night and all, we were on hands & knees at a homecoming game, but compared to college, its a cake walk. You will have groupies in college just like you did in high school, they just call them aux groups now! You just need make sure your grades are up to par and stay focused... keep in 100 lil man!

Little brother
WoW! What's up Youngin'? I truly appreciate the level of spirit that you have for this organization/group that you are attached to, but, trust us when we tell you, that it will pale in comparison to the real deal and, its supposed to. Stay attached to this thing, for the fun and the experience of it, but know that what it is near to, symbolically, is of an intensely sacred nature to a lot of men and women, and there's some etiquette that you guys need to follow, so, when you get a chance, seek some guidance on how to stay within the confines of a high school organization/group.
My specific advice is this, never let the experiences that you'll undergo while being a part of this group, ever allow you to think that the true pledge process is anything akin to what you've experienced at the high school level. I laughed when I read where you stated that "hell night was worth it". That's funny, because a true Hell Night is just what it says, Hellish, lil' buddy. Lastly, if the opportunity to pledge arises once you go away to school, never allow yourself to think that you have an edge over the people that you may pledge with, if they weren't into something like this while in high school. You guys are not a fraternity, and, actually, your group does not come anywhere near what a fraternity is. You'll learn the difference once you have arrived at whatever college campus you are destined to attend, and make no bones about it, you "must" go to college lil' man, the only other option is the military, but, you will choose whatever direction is best for you.
Peace
