Agreed... or more able to give.

"What I find most funny about the Robertson comment is that CNN was running basic facts about Haiti along the bottom of the screen all day, one of which was that 80% of them are Roman Catholics."

True, but . . .

a large segment of the population, while Catholic (or Protestant), also practices Vodou, especially in rural areas. It's interesting how people mix Christianity and Vodou and practice both at the same time, depsite disapproval of this from the Church.

I'm sure that in Robertson's limited understanding, Vodou = devil worship.

But it's a "proven fact" (according to him) that Haiti sold its collective soul to Satan and thus he is collecting payment.

Hehehehehehe......

Well, thanks to Western media we have everyone scared of vodou...

I blame some of this on James Bond and Wes Craven

But doesn't vodou have quite a few Roman Catholic elements to it? At least that is what i remember reading a while back.

Voodoo doesn't have Catholicism mixed in at all, it is its own entity. Voodoo came over with the African tribes during the times of slavery.

What the Haitians (and also Cubans, etc) do is mix the two. For example, some Cubans practice Santeria which is a mixture of Voodoo and Catholicism. I suspect many Haitians do the same, and have their own name for it.

Many Haitians do do the same, and they call it Vodou. The name distinction is not Voodoo and something else (like Santaria), it's West African Vodun and Haitian Vodou. (Vodun and Vodou both became Voodoo in English.)

And DS, you're right to blame James Bond.

I just assumed that addt'l charges would apply. They do for everything else. I'm glad for the retroactive exemption, though, that's a nice surprise.
