Skipping Classes

I use to skip a lot. I learned my lesson after grades came out. But, now that I'm in my upper-level classes, I go everyday unless I'm close to death. I feel that I miss so much if I skip just one class because my professors go over so much information. Look at it this way: you're paying tuition therefore you're paying to be there. It's not like HS where it was free. So, you might as well get your money's worth and attend class.

At Michigan attendance mattered....especially if you had a foreign language class and those professors didnt play.
Skipping a lecture was no biggie, by the time I was a senior id say about 85% of them had notes on the web or were selling them at bookstores. Discussions, you had to be choosy about skipping. I say dont do it. Everyone is right you do become addicted. I had never skipped a class until I college my second semester, after I saw a friend do it. HOOKED! But if you are going to do it, try to do it in moderation, like 1 a month or 2x a semester.

I find that once you skip a class, it has a snowball effect. You'll always want or feel you can skip it.

The real trick is to find out WHICH classes to skip. Some professors give tests that are generally only from their lectures. Those aren't the ones to skip!

I actually had the reverse happen to me, I spent my freshman year on campus at a school in North Carolina, then transferred to GMU, where I now commute from 30 minutes away. I found there were too many distractions (like Mr. Nice Warm Bed), that made it easy to skip. Going the distance forces me to get up and go every day.

While I do agree that taking attendance is childish, it makes students who skip very frequently go to class.

When I was at Baylor, every single class except for the really big ones (there werent that many since its a private school) took attendance. I was so mad when i found out they did that because all my friends at UT werent forced to go to class. I am kind of glad they did that though because it got me to get to class and not miss lectures.

When i transferred to UH, i was happy to know that hardly any classes take attendance. This is where I got into the habit of skipping class a lot for any reason. Fortunately this semester I have three classes back to back and my first and last class take attendance so I have to be there, and since I cant get to school late or leave early I also go to the class I have in the middle of the other two.

By the way, my last class is in a big auditorium and we have to slide our student ID through a scanner when you walk in the room to take roll. After you miss three classes he takes 10 points off your grade for every day missed after that!

Dont make skipping class a habit, its harder to get into the habit of going to class afterwards!

...i don't really miss many classes, but i leave at the break for a whole lot of them with pretty much everyone else. most are just too terrible to stay the full three hours.

I find that the colder it gets outside, the more motivation it takes to go to class.

The best is when it is so hot out that I can't stand being in the house, because the GE building is air-conditioned.

I also was an early riser and 1 st class was 7:30, last class out 11:30 the bar opened at 12:00! Good thing my Business Classes were on the same floor and building!

My last Sem. I had a 3.89 but a high bar bill!!!

exactly tom, schoolwork is key but fun can be had too without sacraficing studytime.

Lol exactly, most of my profs don't even take attendance. I missed a class today. Later when I went to her office hours, I gave the teacher a reason (which was true) and the teacher looked at me like she didn't care that I had missed. This isn't really ever the case but today I got lucky that she didn't really notice the fact that I was gone.

Opps, I must sound aweful to the rest of you all . Sadly to say I am known for my class skipage. I have good grades and all but I only skipp the class I know I can skipp it's either ones that have zero attendance policies, or any class after like 230pm . For some reason I just can't function well after 200pm, dunno why. I am more of an early riser so all the am classes I am there bright an early anything after a certain time I just can't go or won't go rather. But I was like that in high school too. Although I must say over the years, I have gotten better and now I rarely miss class, or rarely take anything after 2pm

it's all about knowing which classes to skip...some are easy to skip because the prof may base all the exams on the book, but if they base it on lecture material..chances are you should probably go...
