Greek Privatization at U of Alabama

When all the things you do in college are based directly on what you did in high school, and on the SAT's for cryin out loud!

THey have enough people for a house? I would think it'd be two guys sitting around eating their own boogers.

LOL at the Mallet Assembly discussion. Seriously, Mallet Assembly is an independent group of male students who made above a certain score on the ACT or SAT. They are not the regular school sponsored Honor Society. Not sure what exactly they do as a group, but they do live on campus. Every conversation I've attempted to have with any of them, no matter how it starts, comes back around to Star Trek or the latest in the Star Wars series.

I think it sucks that some one would want to privatize the greek system there. But if they own their houses, how could they be? They could still get together for IFC/NPC/NPHC councils.

But....what is wrong with the left wing? I'm a liberal. Lots of liberals have been/are in fraternities and sororities. Just because one profressor might have a hair up his ass doesn't mean they all do. Besides, that doesn't sound like its politically motivated. I think his agenda is that college should be only for study. Egg head type.

As for liberals -- my philosophy (as a liberal) has always been that people should be free to do whatever they want, as long as it doesn't harm anyone else. These nutty get-rid-of-the-greek-system guys sound like ultra-conservatives or something. They're trying to tell people what to do and how to live, and that their way is the only way, the right way. Yikes.

i am an alumna of ua as well. and with all due respect, these professors did not bring the negative attention on the university, the organizations did. they have merely responded to it. let's not get it confused. i do not agree with their postion on many fronts because it will not accomplish integration. the only people that will really be hurt are the nphc chapters if they are forced to have an "unified" rush or move off campus.

I was only repeating what I heard about the administration and the faculty senate. I think the administration is angry at the way Pat Hermann & Norm Baldwin (the two main players in the faculty senate) went after the press..they could have better controlled the way this was presented to newspeople. In my opinion, they did not handle this in a way that presented the University in a good light. The fact is, not many black women have attempted to gain entrance into a "white" GLO at Alabama.
I personally know two women who have african-american fathers who pledged "white" sororities at UA, one in 1994 and one in 2000.
I don't think it's a matter of racism, after all, there aren't many white women at UA who are in traditionally "black" GLOs.
I have met Melody Twilley on several occasions and I think that the press did a good job of making her appear sympathetic, while in fact, she went into rush with an agenda and a major chip on her shoulder. Like I said, this is only my opinion, but I *have* met the girl and whether she is black, white, green or blue, she would have a hard time getting into any sorority going through rush the way she did.
Lastly, there was only one african-american girl who went through rush this year. All 15 "white" houses could not have been integrated even if they had all given her a bid.
