I don't think anyone's disputing that there is a process to it. There certainly is and I don't really think anyone is naive enough to think that there isn't, it just isn't stuff for public discussion. So we make jokes like pulling names out of a hat.

It isn't for discussion by the people who took an oath to keep it secret.

People are free to assume, speculate, or otherwise discuss how they think it might work logistically.

Of course.

The problem is that some pnms may take those assumptions, speculations and discussions and think they are the gospel truth.

Or take the worst of them, put them together, and write a book.

People are also free to poke fun at those who assume, speculate, or otherwise discuss.

The sister who preffed me at one sorority told me this after I missed throwing the object she had handed me into the bowl, "That is what we judge you on. Everyone who makes it into the bowl gets a bid and everyone who missed is cut. Too bad, I liked you." She said all this with a smile, of course. I thought it was pretty good.

I'm going to admit that I find it really interesting. Since I know I'm not supposed to talk about my GLO's MS, I generally don't try to get other people to talk about how they do things.

But I wonder. . .

And I'm often amazed at what people reveal really casually sometimes.

Hahah that's absolutely hilarious...though I can see how it could backfire on someone who just doesn't get sarcasm.

I find it very interesting as well. I could really care less about other sororities rituals because, although I am sure all the ceremonies are beautiful, it wouldn't mean anything to me to know what XYZ stands for. But I think membership selection is really interesting, just because I'm sure some groups have come up with more competitive strategies than others...makes you wonder how other sororities do things.

I also crack up about how people accidentally reveal things...like when we are all complaining about rush together somebody will accidentally say something like "Yeah and the fact that we have to sing all of the PNMs names gets so annoying" (obviously no sororities do that, I'm just throwing out something random to make a point) and everybody just stops and stares...but the girl who initially said it just assumed every house did it like hers. (Does that make sense?).

Really? It's that big of a deal to discuss how you do delibs on an anonymous forum?

Well, I don't mind sharing. After each day of rush, we sit around in our living room, and go through a powerpoint with each PNM's name and picture (usually just their facebook picture or one they supply - it's just a reminder of who they are, since we meet so many people. We don't facebook stalk you and then talk about how your picture is terrible or anything like that, don't worry!). People who know the girl or met her during rush give the girl in question a ranking from 1 (terrible) to 5 (amazing), and then explain why they gave that score. We always try to end with a positive, and then everyone in the sisterhood, even those that haven't met the girl, give her a score 1-5 based on what they've heard. Our New Member Selection chair then adds up the points each PNM got, and the more points, the higher on our list she goes. Also, if you have a specific reason why you would feel uncomfortable with a certain girl in the house, you can talk to our president privately, and she will be cut, but that happens fairly infrequently.

I believe that most of the sororities on my campus do something similar. I know one national does not do delibs at all here. Each sister will fill out a slip of paper for every PNM they met during rush or know from previous interaction and give her a score 1-5 in two categories, but I can't remember what those are. I do know 5,5 is the highest, 1,1 is awful. Anyway, they do this during the break between each party, so they end up getting to go home much earlier than the rest of us, but they also don't get to discuss a girl if they have questions. At another national house, the voting options are basically Yes-No. If a girl gets more yesses than nos, she is invited for the next round. Not sure what they do to rank after pref night. More yesses = high on list? Some houses do "bump groups" - a group of 5 or 6 girls who will pass PNMs only among each other during rush. Then, after the parties, they'll do mini-delibs within their bump group, and just talk about the girls their bump group met with. They can submit a form to the NMS chair if they know a girl previously and want to give an opinion.

Obviously, this is only the way we do selection at my school. We don't usually have more than 300 girls rushing, so I have no idea what the process would be at a bigger school where going through each girl at delibs might not be practical (it takes us long enough as it is!).

I think it's fair to assume that most initiation vows involve keeping the private business of the chapter a secret. I do believe that membership selection falls under that category.

Second, this forum is not very anonymous. This is not juicycampus (not that it's very anonymous). Countless posters, when asking for advice or telling a recruitment story give out WAAAY too much information when making inappropriate comments thinking that they are anonymous.

that doesn't seem right
they've never met her and they're voting based on someone else's opinion??

First, GreekChat is about as anonymous as a telephone book. Don't post anything about anything that you wouldn't want to see on a billboard.

Second, if membership selection isn't considered ritual for your sorority, please realize that for most NPC sororities, it is considered ritual. Post what you want about your GLO, but please refrain from saying anything about another GLO.

Thank you.

These are all well and good, but my chapter prefers taking each girl's info sheet, standing at the top of the stairs and tossing them into the air.
Whoever lands closer to the top of the stairs gets a higher ranking.

We like to use the paper air plane plan. you know, write the girls name on paper, make it into an airplane and throw it. The ones that go farther are higher.

But i really like the stairs idea! Maybe next year!

Puleeze! All of the aforementioned techniques are subpar! If you don't do the alphabet x zodiac sign + color compatibility technique, I don't know how you are filling your pledge class with quality women. Definitely lower tier.

Don't you need a way to figure in the family income level to make sure you have top tier?
