It was okay but I didn't like the way it made us look like stepping is at the center of everything we do and getting into our organizations is all about how well you can step or dance. I didn't like that at all. IMO, the creators/directors/producers wasted their opportunity to positively counter the stereotypes in "School Daze" and really show those who know nothing or very little about NPHC greeks, what we're really about. I think the movie could have still been entertaining even with scenes of the greeks performing community service, hosting an educational program or two, etc. They could have done a much better job at showing the whole picture while still focussing on the stepshow competition at the end of the movie. I'm a Writer so as soon as I saw the movie, all of these ideas popped into my head about how I would have changed and presented some things. And it doesn't take a genius to come up with what I did. I went to see the movie when it first came out and I'm still answering questions like "How well do you have to step to get into a sorority or fraternity?" Bottom line: The makers wasted a good opportunity to show the world who we are and to dispel the myths.

I, too, am a writer, and I still say it wasn't that bad.

If I wanted to tell the definitive BGLO story.... oh wait, I did. lol

I did say it was okay, but someone needs to take it to the next level and share the whole story. Maybe I will.

I saw that you said it was okay. My comments weren't all directly toward you. I just don't understand the high expectations everyone had of this flick when we all knew it was a dance movie.

I mean really, did we really believe that street gangs have dance offs?

Did we really believe a man could fly? lol

Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for the movie and I was one of those NPHC greeks who actually supported the movie from the beginning and went to see it opening weekend while many of the greeks around me proclaimed (even before the movie came out) that they were not going to give it a chance. I was one of those encouraging people to get out there and support Black film during opening weekend and had high hopes that people would enjoy it. And I do own it BUT as a Writer, I just see so many areas where the film could have been more, should have been more. I just don't buy into the whole...if it's entertaining, it can't be deep or educational thing. I just don't think like that. If your vision is big enough, you can get the lesson across and still entertain. A phenomenal writer can make the majority of the audience feel exactly how he/she intends.

Stomp The Yard

I have to be honest...I thought it was terrible.

It had great potential in terms of the plot. But it fell short with the bad acting and it felt like one extremely loooooooooooong music video.

I finally saw it with the kids...i too did not have high expectations...I thought it was so cheesy..had too many side comments, the part that had me like was when they the Thetas were discussing dude's qualities

"he has exemplary academic skills..."
"yeah but if he's gonna help us win nationals?"
I hope I am never in a roundtable discussion about prospective members and someone makes a similar comment, for they will feel my wrath LOL

I will say I did like the scene in Heritage Hall, I didn't need my Delta co-worker to do her call and scare half the kids

I was laughing when one of our kids gave away the ending that TNT was going to win and another one who hadn't seen it replied with 'thanks for ruining it for me', in my mind I was like "like it ain't that obvious!"

I have seen this movie and i recieved it as a gift from my husband who has never really been interested in greek life as i have been. I felt that while this movie was entertaining on a level that those not in Greek orgs would like. Mind you i am not a member of a GLO, i have many friends that are and i happened to accompany them when this film came out. My Friends wore their letters and when we where leaving the theatre they were barraged with questions. I will not say that it was a bad movie, but as alphas who wanted to promote the BGLO's should not make it seem that the NPHC orgs recruit dancers and seek people out. While the heritage hall scene was very poignant i felt it would take more to convince someone to join any org, and should they decide to do so that they should want to know the orgs history, meet with members, do community service, make sure that their GPA is upand know in their heart that that is what they want, and not to do it because they are great at dancing or because they feel they must to fit in. I enjoyed the Brotherhood aspect of the movie, but i still did not like the way they portrayed one fraternity as a bunch of arrogant men who seem to feel they were better than the others and the others as their perpetual shadows stuck in the hopes of being better that their rivals, while not showing any community service or greek love towards one another. When this film came out i was hoping it was going to one up school daze and while it helped a bit, there still has yet to be a movie that really shows what it is to be in a BGLO. Although i will always support Black filmmakers and black films, sometimes the best thing to do is enjoy it for what it was meant to be.... Entertainment.
and that's my 2 cents

I thought it was really cute. It was obvious to me what the pretty, smart, and independent minded green eyeshadow wearing leading lady represented. When the kids at my school ask me what AKA is I ask them have they seen the movie and it's a good starting point for a conversation about college.

When the brother came out on the yard, shirtless on that tractor I was like ,"Dang they didn't look like that at my school...I was shortchanged in the full HBCU experience!"

Honeydo was hating of course and then started barking.
