Who says you can't educate and entertain at the same time?

That's what the nuns always told me as well, and I figure they know something about how to keep people from looking up your skirt.

Did they also tell you not to wear patented leather? Undie reflections are a no-no.

Maybe Britney Spears should have learned a little more from her southern upbringing. Crossed ankles would have benefited her a few months back!

And her drinking less, doing less drugs, having more coordination, and generally all around being a smarter person would benefit the result of her uncrossed ankles.

I guess that's what you get for being a sex symbol at 16. That seems to warp the best of them!

First, let me admit I haven't read this entire thread, but I think I've read enough to get the idea.
We definitly had "rules of conduct," most of which I thought were ridiculous when I was a pledge, but as I got older I saw the reasoning behind *most*. LOL
I can't remember them all of course, but a few stick out quite prominently - all alcoholic beverages must be in a cup, no bottles or cans... I don't remember an issue with mason jars ever coming up....
As for the drinking on the dance floor rule, as long as you complied with the cup rule, you were fine.
- If you smoke you must sit down, w/legs crossed, and I want to say you had to have a roof over your head, but I've never been a smoker....except that one cig my 2nd week of college that almost made me throw up.....so I'm not so sure about the roof thing
- definitely no drinking in your letters or anything else that you would not want to have your standards chair see you doing.....
- obviously no shacking in frat houses or walks of shame out of one the next morning
i'm sure i will remember more, but i think the point to most of these rules is to protect young women from themselves and the stupid things we ALL either did or were tempted to do when we were young, naive freshmen. also, some are just so you don't look like (sorry to be so blunt) trash. i know some will disagree, but there is just something different about a pic from a social event where everyone is holding a beer bottle and a cigarette and one where some are holding cups. obviously, everyone knows they are drinking, but it just looks a little bit classier. maybe that's just being southern.
my only other comment about this after reading some of the posts is - no one ever held a gun to someone's head and made them pledge any sorority, get initiated, or remain a member. if you don't like a group's rules or want to abide by them, why would you want to be a member of this organization? just to make yourself miserable and be a pain in the a**? jeez, some people need to realize that they are NOT going to be a perfect fit for every group and there is NOTHING wrong with that. find a group you are a good fit for and enjoy yourself, while letting the other groups do their own thing. its called a free society.......

Most people don't grasp the difference between a "Southern" upbringing and a "country" upbringing. Ms. Spears most certainly falls in the country category.

BUT - there are country people with manners. My great-grandparents were country through and through - lived on a farm, had a well, old house with a sleeping porch - but you couldn't find people with a better grasp of the true meaning of hospitality and good breeding. . They would be SHOCKED at Ms. Spears' behavior. (And yes - I knew my great-grandparents -my family lives forever. I think our family record is 107!)

Hey--my great-grandmother lived to 107 as well! Weird.
And yes, country doesn't ALWAYS equal...redneck? Trailer trash? Swamp rat? My family (non-nuclear) would definitely qualify as country...as well as Southern.

My aunt by marriage actually grew up in Britney's hometown, Kentwood, LA. It is quite country... but the source of really good spring water, incidentally. Britney does not have country and southern manners. She has manners appropriate for a poorly educated girl whose parents used her as a meal ticket from the age of 6. I don't think those manners are specific to any region...thank God!

You said that in a way I could only hope to put it! Thank you for summing Britney up so well!

So Britney grew up in Kentwood. Didn't she break into the business at 11 or 12 when she joined the MMC? She was barely out of high school once she blew up. She probably lacks the southern manners because she's spent more time elsewhere than all the years she lived in Kentwood.

Britney
I think it is a case of "Momma didn't raise her right". My grandmother grew up the daughter of a turpentiner, raised in the piney woods and married at 13. She is as elegant and refined as any "city bred" woman you can name - but her mother was very demanding in terms of behavior.
Reese Witherspoon comes to mind as one "raised right".
