UF
I also think that, when you have this many women coming out for informal, you have to ask yourself why these women aren't showing up in the fall for FR.

That I think I can partially answer. UF deferred acceptance is growing. We personally know several girls that were not accepted for fall 2011 but for spring 2012. So I know girls who attended spring rush that were not even at UF in the fall. I know one girl who really did want the experience of fall rush; however, also wanted to feel she belonged and be part of a sisterhood so I am betting she will join now and not wait until fall.
My daughter just got told she got in the sorority house next year at UF so she is on "top of the world".

Congratulations, GatorPNM! How exciting! Just a quick thought (which perhaps you've already done): it would be polite to go ahead and decline the other bid, so that they may offer that to someone else, since you know you will accept the bid from your number two (or number one, should that call also come). There may well be a PNM sitting in the same predicament as you, with a bid from her number two hoping for a call from her number one, which happens to be the one you know you aren't going to accept.
This is exactly the problem with such an unstructured spring recruitment, although I certainly understand UF found themselves here and are doing their best. It's so circular! But, in fairness, this same situation also happens sometimes in structured FR with snap bids- I've been involved in that mess before as well!

That's right - time to show the Panhellenic love. I would definitely email (or call but I don't think that's necessary) and politely decline and wish them the best of luck. They will appreciate the gesture and you never know when that courtesy will be repaid. In good karma if nothing more specific.
I'd like to add my congratulations! I hope you'll do a recruitment thread.

There's nothing you can do, except try to relax and wait.

^^^You just have to wait it out, guys.
I know it sucks, but that's all you can do.

I'm going to hijack this thread for a moment. If they have more women showing up than they have bids, does that mean they set total too low? Part of me feels like they should try to accommodate everyone who is interested, and part of me knows that would hurt the smaller chapters. In any case, I'm inclined to say that with more than 4-5 chapters involved, there needs to be a) PH involvement in handing out bids, and b) at least one sort of "invitational" round so you don't end up with this kind of mess.

^^^I think there is room for everyone on some level, as everyone is varying degrees of closeness to total. The thing is, I think that PNMs are generally all gunning for those groups who do have more interest than bids, which is where the problem starts.
Like, I'm sure there is room for everyone, if everyone "spreads out" and accepts bids to different groups, but that generally doesn't happen. Does that make sense? I have had a full day of kids and school. lol.

No this makes sense. It's like any competitive school, if everyone kept an open mind there would likely be a place for everyone. But it doesn't work that way.

Right, but the problem is that there is no way for PNM's really to gauge the chapters' interest, and vice-versa. How many PNM's who get cut from their top choice during FR are totally shocked about it?

I think even if you showed the PNMs mathematical figures (i.e. XYZ has only ended up pledging 5% of the women who wanted to pledge them, or whatever), made them listen to testimonials from former rushees, and had the sisters flat out tell them that they had 90% of their pledge class in mind before rush even started...
there would STILL be PNMs who would be completely convinced that they could beat those odds and secure a spot in the chapter they want, no matter what.

To the girls who are freaking out, unfortunately you are just going to have to be patient. Hopefully you'll hear something in the next several days, but based on how this process is set up it could take that long. If they do a round of bids and then have to wait 2 whole days to discover they're being declined, then do the whole thing again, you could easily be talking about 6 days before they get to you, even without being that far down on their list.
Please do let us know how it works out for you.

Right, I meant an invitational pref round or something so that they would see who had invited them and who hadn't. Information about the general case isn't going to do anything.
