It seemed as though you were calling me a man when you know that I'm far from it. If that was not your intent, then I apologize. I still stand by what I said about this operation, though. I'm not able to really celebrate this victory because I'm afraid of people retaliating.

^^^This. I had a planned meet up with my bestie in NYC (half way point for both of us as I'm in Boston & she's in DC). Last week, I was excited about finding a $9 plane tix to EWR just outside of the city...Today not so much. Hell, I'm not thrilled about any of my other transportation options into NYC at this point.

I'm happy the deed was done, but if anything we all need to be even more vigiliant than we were yesterday.

GWB got huge accolades for capturing Saddam Hussein. Of course he would have gotten accolades for capturing Osama Bin Laden. Most of us who were upset with GWB were upset because of the switch in focus from OBL to Saddam but STILL gave him accolades for capturing Saddam Hussein.

It is what most people thought was the goal all along, since the first day we went into Afghanistan.

Totally agree. I see no difference in the celebration factor whether he was taken dead or alive. He was taken, that was all that mattered to me.

No, in all seriousness, I feel like this victory is somewhat being taken away from our men and women in uniform because many of Obama's supporters (not all-I don't want to generalize) are looking at those of us who didn't vote for him and saying, "See...See what happened? See, it's because of Obama that the world is a safer place. Bush did nothing for us but, Obama rocks!" It went from being, "Yay-we are Americans who care about our freedom and safety" to "Look at what Obama did."

That's what annoys me. I realize we can all agree to disagree. That's great. Just don't lose the message that freedom isn't free and many people who came before the Navy Seals that killed Osama Bin Laden and those who will go after, are the reason we can rally in the streets over the death of a terrorist. I have nothing but respect for my military brothers and sisters. I also respect (but, maybe don't care for) our President. Let's remember that this is about unity and being proud of America.
You are totally personalizing this. I haven't heard anybody have anything but huge praise for the troops. My FB exploded with praise and thanks to all service men/women. If yours didn't, you need new friends

I wasn't a big fan of GWB (nor am I of Obama, actually), but I would absolutely give him (GWB) props for making the decision to proceed with a mission that resulted in the death of Bin Laden. No question.
Ditto. 100%. I too recall the botched Iran Hostage operation and believe it cost him the next election.

The irony of this thread is that last night, as Republicans and Democrats alike from all over the country were "celebrating" on Facebook, I thought "We really needed something to unify us because we are so polarized now and this definitely reminded people that we are ONE." People were feeling all happy and patriotic. Then I read this thread and people STILL find reasons/ways to be divided. That's sad to me, very sad.

I definitely wasn't callng you a man but I guess I can see how one could take it that way. As for the retaliation, I expect it but I don't think not moving forward with the operation would have been the best decision either. After 9/11 I think most Americans assume that the threat of Terrorism on U.S. soil is here to stay no matter the victories.

I was wondering how long in this thread it would take before folks started getting political.

I believe that is what they (the terrorist) want. I take them at their word.

Had the Taliban turned over UBL when asked by GWB we wouldn't be in Afghanistan so it is all a moot point. We went after him, didn't get him, and have been fighting the Taliban ever since. We took him out, so now the question is, do we leave Afghanistan and let it go back to what it was pre-2001 or do we try to leave some semblence of a quasi-democracy in its place? I really couldn't give a crap about Afghanistan and its people as I consider them a lost cause. However, if we don't fight the terrorists somewhere we will probably have to fight them over here. They have already showed that they are willing to attack us here. Pick your place.

Did you all see that the Vatican made a statement regarding the death of Osama Bin Laden? It's times like this that I always wonder what people are thinking in every country, other than America.

So the man responsible for some of the most deadly terrorist attacks ever seen is now off of this world but some are more concerned that people celebrated? Wow. I really don't care that people in the middle east see us partying in the streets -Do you guys realize that celebrations or not AL-QAEDA STILL HATES US AND WANTS TO SEE AMERICANS DIE? People weren't celebrating some attack that killed civilians or innocents, as THEY do, people were celebrating the end of monster.

Celebrating any murder is sickening. It is horrific that it had to come to this in order to stop him, but our leaders made the best decisions they could with what they were given. However, to relish in his death is grotesque. Let us not forget that his ideology didn't die with him, so our accomplishment was killing a man.
