Californiagirls's Recruitment thread!

Hi everyone!

I have been browsing this site for awhile, and I decided that I want to share my rush story. I have been excited about joining a sorority since I found out what one was. My older sister and my mom are both legacies (I won't say where yet.) So I have a lot of experience with greek life. Now it's my turn to find my home and have as much fun, hopefully even more, than my big sister.

There are 11 sororities at my school. I won't mention the name, although you can probably guess if you are from Cali.

They are:

Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Phi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi

Both my legacies are at this school. I got recommendations from my mom and sister, and a few from my sisters friends. I have recs to six of the eleven.

Anyway, I am getting so excited! Rush starts on Tuesday with round one (a visit to all the houses). My RC told us to wear jeans and sandals, but I think I might go a little dressier. Any Suggestions?

Thanks for listening. I can't wait. If you have any advice, let me know!

Lots of Love,

Cali Girl

Dress it up a little, but don't show up in a fancy dress if they call for jeans! A cute top and casual skirt will work, too.

Recently a mom shared some advice she gave her daughter with regard to recruitment. I think it is the best advice I've ever heard: Remember applying to college? You probably applied to a group of schools that you knew you would like and could see yourself at. You didn't set all of your hopes into one university and say to yourself, "If they don't accept me, I'm not going to college!" That would be silly!

Go into recruitment with this same mindset. Instead of getting fixated on one chapter based on some brief meetings with the members and the gossip you hear from other prospective members, go in with an open mind and look for a few sororities you could see yourself at. You'll be much happier and have more options open to you.

Good luck this week! Be yourself and have fun!

Good luck with recruitment!

I already know what school your at (which you said people would probably figure out), so I would suggest making very non-specific comments. For example, I wouldn't say "so I decided to wear jeans and a pink top with flowers and sandals and my blonde hair was in a ponytail" or "so I went to ABC and they wore a blue top with white bottoms and I really didn't like them". These are just examples, but the more specific the comments the easier it is for people to pick you out.

I am pretty sure a few GC members go to this school.

Have a wonderful time! Keep an open mind!

Good luck!

Best of luck California Girl!

Be yourself. I know it sounds cliche, but it's the best advice I can offer. If you pretend to be the person you think a sorority wants, you are going to end up unhappy when it's not the right fit for the REAL you.

Also, I went through rush in the south, so I may be mistaken, but the clothing they suggested for recruitment was very very casual compared to what other girls wore. I suggest asking someone who has been through recruitment at this school before you follow what your RC told you.

I'm sure you'll do great!

Thanks guys!

Thanks for your support everyone! I'm so glad to have people I can share my experience with. All my friends are going through recruitment, and we decided not to share opinions, and only discuss which houses we decide to pref. I think this is best to keep jealousy and gossip at bay.

About what I'm wearing: I'm thinking a cute knee-length printed skirt, a cami and kitten heel sandals. What does everyone think of this?

I know most people can guess which school I'm at, but there are so many PNMs going through and I will be discreet about how I look and the descriptions of each house. I do promise to reveal each house after bid day!

Thanks for all your advice. My sister has been giving me some too.

She's not at SDSU. We don't have some of those sororities.

My recruitment

Thanks for everyone who left kind words for me. Recruitment went really well today. Because so many people have requested to hear my story via PM, I'm going to leave some very discrete comments.

Reese Witherspoon - The girls here were very sweet. I love their philanthropy, and everyone was very friendly. I liked them.

Jennifer Anniston - The girls here were very fun. I really liked the way they have participated in many activities on campus, and I really got along well with one girl I talked to. I loved them.

Natalie Portman - The girls here were so excited. I was so excited to hear their cheers, and I thought they were all so cute. I loved them.

Mischa Barton - The girls here were so friendly. I like how each girl was really unique, I also had a lot in common with one girl I chatted with. I loved them.

Rachel McAdams - The girls here were very put together. I really liked how much spirit they had, and how organized they were. I liked them.

Scarlett Johansson - The girls here were very outgoing. I really liked how everyone I talked to seemed excited to see me, and I loved their outfits. I loved them.

Sarah Jessica Parker - The girls here were very smart. I talked to a pre-med major and a pre-law major. They all were very well-spoken. I liked them.

Beyonce- The girls here were very enthusiastic about their sorority. I liked how close the girls seemed, and the conversation topics were interesting. I liked them.

Gwenyth Paltrow - The girls here were really spirited. I talked to a former cheerleader, and their excitement was so contagious. I loved them.

Cameron Diaz - The girls here were really funny. I loved how the sisters cracked jokes with eachother, and I was laughing almost the entire time. I liked them.

Kate Hudson - The girls here were so down-to-earth. I really liked how proud they seemed of their sorority heritage, and everyone was very sweet. I liked them.

I'm sorry I can't offer you more. But I figured something is better than nothing. I'm exhausted, and I'll let everyone know where I go back. If you PM me about a specific sorority/actress name I can give you some more details. Hope everyone had a great day.

Love,

Cali girl

why wear white

This is from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_d...fter_Labor_Day

"An old custom prohibits the wearing of white after Labor Day. The custom is rooted in nothing more than popular fashion etiquette.[1] In actuality, the etiquette originally stated that white shoes were the taboo while white or "winter white" clothes were acceptable.[2] This custom is fading from popularity as it continues to be questioned and challenged, particularly by leaders in the fashion world. "Fashion magazines are jumping on this growing trend, calling people who 'dare' to wear white after Labor Day innovative, creative, and bold. Slowly but surely, white is beginning to break free from its box, and is becoming acceptable to wear whenever one pleases. This etiquette is also compared to the Canadian fashion rule of not wearing green after Rememberance day. "[3]"

This article cites another web article which I think sums up the rule perfectly:
"We can only surmise that the point of this rule is to ensure that people only wear summer fashions during the actual summer months. The opposite probably applies as well, but people generally don't need to be reminded to avoid wearing a goose-down parka in 100-degree weather."

I know a lot of people in the fashion industry and white is perfectly acceptable to wear right now. Should you wear white linen pants when it's 60 degrees? I would vote no. A high fashion mod white dress, I vote YES!

Unless you are attending UCLA Presents and you're a new member... in which case, yes, you wear white after Labor Day!

I agree...I have a gorgeous white coat that is ONLY appropriate for winter. It seems to be more about the material than the color. Just as white linen would be odd in winter, a white wool sweater would be odd in summer.

My new member period is going great so far! I've been so busy but loving it. For those who asked, I preffed Alpha Phi and Kappa Alpha Theta. And I'm sure you will be happy to know that my mom and I are now sisters! She cried when I called her. Thanks for all your support and encouragement.
