Awe!! That is so exciting I hadn't really thought about that. All this time, I've been talking to potential sisters. We might be family someday! <-- that makes me giddy

I just heard that about 1/3 of the 'AB' sorority is going inactive. This is their first response to staying local and obviously some of the girls are REALLY upset about it. I wonder if they'll really go inactive or if they'll tough it out and stick with their sisters.

Sometimes you just don't see what's good for you.

I forget and wasn't sure when I looked - with the fraternities, did all of "ABC" go w/ Chi Phi and all of "DEF" go with Delta Sigma Phi?

I'm glad the vote went well, FuziCrayon and I hope things work out w/ Phi Mu!

Congratulations fuzi! Phi Mu is a terrific organization! I can't wait to hear how things go with colonization!

The other local wants to be local? Seems like they are signing their death certificate with that move! I really wish that they would have chosen KD!!

I'm so confused! Did the school's administration say that the locals had to become national or disband?

I agree that it might be hard to be the only local on a campus full of nationals.

Phi Mu is an awesome organization (and sort of like a sister sorority to Alpha Delta Pi!) !!! I wish you all the best!! Please keep us updated!!!

I have heard that a significant number of the ABs want to disaffiliate from their group and go national. They don't think the local can compete with Phi Mu rushwise, activitywise, or any other way. I agree. Phi Mu is known as a "face" sorority in this state--most of the chapters are full of gorgeous women--and they could be down here this fall colonizing with all these gorgeous actives from nearby chapters and then AB will be putting on the little rush they've had for years. I think that AB will be left in the dust, no matter how many nationals we get!

Several of the faculty feel that there's space for 2 other nationals here--I agree too. With the disaffiliated ABs and all the girls who never pledged, I'm sure there are well over 100 girls who want to go Greek!

Texas Princess--the faculty members were told that no locals would be allowed so we don't know what gives with that...whether they're going to try to go sub rosa or just disappear. If they are going to be allowed to continue as a local, their future will be, um, interesting to say the least. Like I told fuzicrayon, they better not send any new members dressed in stupid costumes into my classroom! And I will bust them again if they make the new members dress like leprechauns and march singing through WalMart. Pike4Life has also seen that.

33girl, I'm pretty sure that the guys' groups all went with the nationals. Or at least no one heard of anyone disaffilating.

Fuzicrayon, you got a B on your final!

Just my $.02...From a local point of view, no, it's not hard being the only local on campus. When all of the sororities on our campus decided to go national in the early 1990s we were the only one's who decided to stay local. It was just the right thing for us to do.

Over the last 7 years that I have been around we have almost always been the largest group on campus, we have the highest retention rate of new members, and our alumnae are much more active than any other alumnae groups.

Best of luck to you!!

carnation, thanks for the update & clarification!

I hope no one will be prancing around Walmart in leprechaun-gear next fall or even after that!

You know what makes me upset is that this IS what people look at during recruitment...what the women look like, being part of the "pretty" sorority...

I so wish this wasn't and isn't true...

Well, it's not just the looks--Phi Mu must have a much larger rush budget than AB. They'll have things like multimedia presentations and they'll talk about national philanthropies and programming and alum clubs and they'll bring in all these impressive local alums. I can think of at least 9 local girls who are currently Phi Mu actives at Georgia colleges and they'll be talking to their friends as well. Also, many freshmen will want to be in nationals like their friends. One reason our college has lost many potential freshmen is that so many women want to join nationals.

Finally, many parents around here have refused to let their kids join the locals because of their past rep (through 2001) of hazing. I for one would have gone berserk if I'd seen my daughter marching in formation at 6 AM or being yelled at or dressed in ridiculous outfits. As far as I know, that's been over for over 2 years but the reputation persists.

I have met some of my sisters from Georgia, and I wouldn't say "pretty" so much as "classy." These women are not all cookie-cutter 6'0" blondes, but they all take pride in their appearance, and have an aura about them, and that, I think, is just fine to admire.

wellllllllll.....

................it's all fine and grand that Phi Mu was picked by one of the locals, and I am sure Phi Mu Hqtrs will say yes and they will both live happily ever after etc...it surely does seem to be a match made in heaven...

...but let's not forget that two other National sororities presented as well -- Gamma Phi Beta and Kappa Delta -- BOTH are outstanding sororities (if I do say so myself!) and both have lots to be proud of -- are we not seen as 'face' sororities because we weren't chosen, I don't know...

...heck, I know my aging face ain't that gorgeous anymore! C'est la vie...Nonetheless, I am not gonna feel bad...

...after all, Phi Mu was a pretty likely choice since their Nu chapter used to be there many many years ago...their HQtrs is less two hours away (and in fact it will soon move to my fair city

...Personally, I hope that Carnation's prognostication ends up being true and one or both of us 'other' sororities are asked to colonize too. I am ready to help -- no matter how far it is for me to drive (less than two hours) and I know one of our local alums is ready to start an alumnae chapter now! She seems fairly prominent from what I can tell -- she is president of the local symphony orchestra and happens to live next door to the university president...

Congrats indeed to Phi MU and Let's all think happy thoughts for ALL the GLOs that presented!
