Well I think that it's great that Michael Jordan has donated this money to a HBCU. However, what I don't understand is the reason for changing the name of the university. I mean, whether Michael donated $2.00 or $2 million, what is the significance of changing the name of the university? I could see them building a center, gym, or something like that and then naming THAT after Michael Jordan, but the whole school? What's up with that? Did Michael say that in order for them to receive this money that they had to change the name? I mean, someone help me understand this. PLUS...Michael Jordan, to MY knowledge, never even ATTENDED North Carolina A & T. I feel that the university's officials need to think about the meaning behind the school's original name, ask the opinions of the students and alumnae, and they need to really think about this because from MY point of view, it looks as if the school is willing to compormise anything (including it's original name) just for money.
Some years ago, a woman donated something like $20 million to the University of South Carolina (in Columbia, SC). All she asked was that the majority of the money be used to enhance and build up their business department. This woman was an alumni and her major was business. Yet there was and still is no talk about even changing the name of the university once she donated this money.
Bill Cosby has donated millions of dollars to different universities (including Spelman), but you don't see any of them changing the name of their universities to COSBY UNIVERISTY.
I just don't get it.
