Doesn't matter. They can (and many have) work in the recording industry or on broadway (or off-Broadway-- Constantine was apparently in Rent somewhere in the New York area). What matters is that they aren't currently under contract and that they were under 28 and over (whatever age it was) at the time of the auditions.
There was an article I read on Yahoo news a number of weeks back that stated the experience that the top 24 all had prior to being on AI. Of course, I can't find the article anymore. -sigh- But it listed the fact that at least one person had cut a demo album and had some play of it on the radio, but that that person wasn't under contract anymore.
